Last time I suggested a Weekend Project, it was all about making noise. This week, I'm swinging the pendulum to the opposite side and proposing a Silent Film project. And when I say silent, I mean no sound. At all.

This means you're going to have to make actions, edits, and direction speak for you. You are allowed to use those old-timey slides to show what people are saying and to narrate your story. But remember, silence!

Check out Silent Film by Benjamin VanderVeen for a perfect example.

As always, be sure to add your video to the The Weekend Project Group. Next Friday I'll pick a winner and bestow either 1,500 free HD embeds or 200 megs of extra upload space. I'm feeling generous and decided to bump the prizes for this week's project. I don't care what Dan says, you guys deserve it.

So according to the example, music is okay?

Andrea Allen

When I say silent, I mean that there is no audio from the video itself. If you use music, please make sure you don't use the words being sung to narrate your story. In other words if you, don't sing, "Mary had a little lamb" and then show a picture of a girl with a lamb.

Again, let the editing, direction, and actions speak for you.

I gotta ask, too. Can we use music? Cheezy piano music would only add to authenticity of the silent film genre! :D

Andrea Allen

Andrea Allen Staff

Agreed. Cheesy piano music is the way to go if you use music.
Definitely try not use a song to narrate the story for you.

This project reminds me of the old comedy shows. Where it's black and white, crazy piano and black slides which displays the text when the comedians talked.
I'm innn!

can we use ambient sounds, not from the video, but high frequencies sounds and breath or that kind of things?

Hello all. I'm new to this amazing sight. I've uploaded my first video but it has no sound. It seems that the data rate, and sound sample rate weren't configured to what vimeo required. How do I go about making these corrections. Do I configure them when I'm rendering the files in an editing program? Is there a way I can configure them with another compressing program? Please help.

Hi Joel,

Welcome to Vimeo. Please post your comment just once, multiple times is not necessary. If you look to our help page for more information on your video issue, you'll find some solutions there.

I on board Andrea, maybe this time since I figured out how to add the videos to the group I will actually be able to have my video seen by the group...last time, I didn't figure out how to add my video to the group until the contest was over ::sigh:: nevertheless, I am in.

I can't help but notice that nearly all the videos that have been added so far for this particular project are ones that have already been on Vimeo for some time. I was under the impression that videos have to have been made specifically for the project.

Yeah, unfortunately people spam videos in groups irrelevant to the video for extra views.

SteveR

While I totally agree about the adding of irrelevant videos to groups, the problem in this instance is slightly different. The problem at the moment is that people are thinking "Hey, I put a silent video on Vimeo weeks/months/years ago, I'll add it to the silent film project", despite the fact that entries are supposed to be made specifically for the project.

I'm new to the weekend project group (just joined last week.) But agree with SteveR that it can be cOnFuSiNg. "The rules" state the vids should not be something already uploaded. (See vimeo.com/blog:190 where the question is "I just did something like this last week. Am I able to enter it instead of recreating another? I even sent a message to the original creator. I just need to add a link to their video. " & the response is "Um, ok but generally we're stricter about this but I'm kind of a softie with rules for fun projects :) "

Also, per *this* weekend project's guidelines, "This week, I'm swinging the pendulum to the opposite side and proposing a Silent Film project. And when I say silent, I mean no sound. At all." And a few lines later, "But remember, silence! "

Well, I took that for what it said...no sound...at all. Silence. Then I see all these vids with music being submitted & finally find in the blog "When I say silent, I mean that there is no audio from the video itself. If you use music, please make sure you don't use the words being sung to narrate your story. In other words if you, don't sing, "Mary had a little lamb" and then show a picture of a girl with a lamb."

I'm not sure how music equates to "no sound. At all." "Silence." ???

It's a bit cOnFuSiNg for those of us new to the group & trying to follow "the rules."

Wow. Let's all just relax for a second and remember that this is just for fun.

First, SteveR, I will remove the videos from the Group that don't belong when I get a chance. You can trust me when I say I can't dedicate my time to it at the moment. But I will before the end of the week.

And Web Mistress, you are correct in that what I said is a little as you say "cOnFuSiNg." I didn't realize when I posted the example that there was sound on it. Admittedly, I was not wearing my headphones in the office, I searched for a "silent film" and found a one that I liked.

When someone called me on the fact that it contained music, I decided to allow music. Old-timey piano music sort of goes with the genre as another user pointed out.

Thank you for your diligence in keeping with the rules -- I'm obviously more lenient than you'd like.

And as a reminder to all, these Weekend Projects are just ideas to keep the community engaged and creative. It's supposed to be fun! The competition aspect is just to put a little more incentive behind the idea.

I've noticed that a lot more of the videos which have been added over the last day or two have actually been made for this project, which is good.

I just uploaded a video project of mine. Not sure if it complies. It is silent, but doesn't necessarily tell a story.

Well... not in the whole sense of you're assignment... but a silent movie with just music. The images tell the story... but there is a narrative in both music (lyrics) combined with the film.

We figure since some people work on weekends this way more people can join in and as I'm sure you know sometimes you need a day to shoot and a day to edit. This way more people get a chance to participate.

First time entering one of these contest & I've gone and uploaded a video to my profile - do i need to re-upload to the group as well?

No, you do not have to re-upload the video to add it to the group. All you need to do is click the 'Add to collections' link to the right of the comments on your video. There you can add to any groups you are a member of.

Also, I went ahead and added it for you.
