Staff Blog / Exciting news! New Canon HD video contest on Vimeo!
Hello friends,
I have very exciting news for anyone with an HD video camera. As of 12:01am EST, we are now accepting submissions for an incredible new collaborative film making contest between Canon and Vimeo called "The Story Beyond the Still".
The contest is pretty simple. Vincent Laforet, photographer and film maker extraordinaire, was given a captivating still image by Canon to interpret into a 2-4 minute short film using the Canon 7D. Vincent created "The Cabbie", ending the powerful short film with an incredible still image of his own.
Now this is where YOU come in! Anyone who enters must use Vincent's final still image and interpret that still into the next chapter of the story and end his/her film with a still image as well. For each chapter, users will vote on a round of finalists selected by the amazing judges to determine the next chapter of the story. There will be 6 chapters after Vincent's, each beginning from the previous month's last still image. So if you don't win the first round, you can try five more times!
Prizes for the contest are outstanding! Each chapter winner will receive their choice of either a 7D or a 5D Mark II, a choice of select Canon lenses, a one-year Vimeo Plus membership, and a trip at the end for each chapter winner to shoot a short film with Vincent Laforet himself!
For more information on the rules (which you should read very carefully), the judges (an impressive list!) and the prizes (unbelievable), please visit the contest page.
We are very excited to be partnering with Canon on this ground-breaking contest and we cannot wait to see the creative submissions to the contest! So tell all your friends!!
Love,

I think this is one of those instances where the Official Language of the rules doesn't completely elucidate the spirit of the competition. Legalese can often be blunt and clumsy.
I don't think Vimeo really wants to exclude anyone from participating. I do think that in order to enter you will need to use a valid US address and phone number. Filmmaking is a collaborative process, often bringing people together from various nationalities. I imagine that might be the case for many entering this contest. One would suppose that as long as a participant enters with valid US address and phone number they would be "good to go". Perhaps that indivual would have a friend or family member in the states who they could "collaborate" with.
Any any case, if you have a project in mind, I think you should produce and submit it.
Article19 Plus
perhaps, but what if you do all the work, win and then Canon (which has European and Asian headquarters because it's a bloody Japanese company) says you don't get the good stuff because you're not American and we think you used the address to bypass the rules?
Lonny Quattlebaum PRO
I have a sneaking feeling that the contest organizers will make sure the winning entries get their due recognition.

My understanding of the entry rules is that you can enter as long as you provide a US Address and phone number.

shame.

I'm no lawyer, but based on what I've read of the rules, you do not need to be a US citizen to participate in the competition, but you do need to sign up with a US address and phone number. I've heard of some people who are talking about using the address and phone number of a friend or family member in the states. I'll bet that would work just fine.

It would be nice to see some more diversity in the judging panel. A female judge or a person of color on the judging panel. It's a fact that there is not enough diversity on the panel. Moving forward as a people, we should try to be more culturally sensitive. No, judegment here, just a thought.
TheMuc
I may come across as ignorant but I found that comment quite hollow in the context of things.
Article19 Plus
Judging panel full of white men, what else is new?
A Rigged Production Plus
I found such a comment whack, out there and incoherent. I don't want to start a flame war on this page out of respect for Vimeo, but Will, I think you took one look at the judges judging this competition and blew it completely and unnecessarily out of proportion for little to know actual reason.
Funnily (and ironically) enough, it's people with your attitude that are "throwin' it back to the stone age" as it were.
Look around, Vimeo is for everyone. There's no need to make outrageous claims or point the finger.
Brian L. Andrews Plus
besides, when does diversity trump skill? they didnt pick the people because they were all the same, they picked them because they were good at what they do, you need to look at the person as a person, not a nationality, gender, or other "diversity" to be included, believe it or not, your comment Will, was racist, and sexist not intended i know but the nature of the contest is for talented people to judge, not ethnically diverse people to judge.
Article19 Plus
right, making a comment about diversity is in and of itself inherently racist/sexist, there's torture in that logic.
Dustin Shepard
I'm ready to DO THIS!
Harald Scherz Plus
If the largest manufacturer of cameras suggests its cooperation on a particular project the interest is enormously high.
Of course, there are prizes to win and fame to gain.
Still... no canon, no contest, no vimeo (no offense) is necessary to make such a collaborative work!
So lets put it the other way around: If you neither care about the fame nor the presents you might win - THEN YOU ARE FREE TO DO ANYTHING WITH ANYONE ANYWAY! - WITHOUT ANY LIMITATIONS!
With good intention,
- Harald

So let me get this straight. In order to enter the contest, you must shoot with a Canon, and if you win, you get a Canon, which you already have. It would be nice, though, to have an extra camera.
Blake Whitman Staff
any HD camera is fine, doesn't have to be a Canon. I recommend reading all the rules very carefully if you plan on entering just to be clear.
Victor Engel Plus
I guess you're right. I'm trying to remember why I thought it had to be shot with Canon. It must have been the title of this page. I'm guessing I read "Canon HD" video contest, rather than Canon "HD video" contest.
Cedar Videography
USA only?..Very poor.
Lonny Quattlebaum PRO
I don't think Vimeo really wants to exclude anyone from particapating. I'm thinking if you enter the contest with a proper US adress and phone number you'll be OK. If you've got a project you're considering, I think you should find a way to enter.

Anyone with an HD video camera, does this mean we aren't required to shoot with a DSLR? A video-video camera will suffice?

For some legal reasons I don't really understand, the OFFICIAL entry guidelines confine the competition to US RESIDENTS. It probably has to do with adhering to legal requirements in various places that they would like extend the competition to. LEGALLY, it's probably pretty tricky to write a consistent set of guidelines that conform various national and local legal systems that might dictate how such competitions should be operated.
That being said, I also know that VIMEO is OFFICIALLY one of the most open social media sharing sites on the internet, and they have a great INTERNATIONAL community that they would hate to exclude or alienate. I suspect that anyone who wants to participate should be able to find a way. As I understanding the guidelines, as long as you enter with a valid US ADDRESS & PHONE NUMBER, you should be solid. If you don't personally have and address or phone number, maybe somebody on your CREW does?
Anywho, If you're interested in participating, I personally hope to see your submission!

So let me get this right. I'm allowed to enter this competition which is thrown out to the Vimeo community......as long as i live in the states. So does that mean this is exclusively a competition for those who reside in the united states of america. So this would mean that this competition is open to 305,529,237 people excluding 6,386,501,040 people. it hardly seems fair. :-]
Guerilla Creative PRO
Canon has offices all over the world. Why can't they take care of the legals? Being able to us a US address is a decent loop-hole, but hardly fair.
When kicking off a competition like this why wouldn't the organizers understand that the rest of the world might like to join in. At least have the decency to not send non US members the post...

James,
If you're seriously considering entering the Canon HD contest, I think you should. I'm sure you could find someone on you're crew with a US address & phone number. Pretty sure that's all you 'll need. ;)
p.s. US loves Cananda, you also gave us Lorne Greene, Paul Shaffer and Rick Moranis!

Those are the rules. Dont whine about it. It's just a contest. If it were held in another county, I'm sure the same would happen. I dont see a lot of offers open to US citizens abroad.

I find this very dissappointing as we, European residents and also other people who do not live in that "great" country (yes that's very ironic!), don't even have the opportunity to enter the contest. That makes me very sad..

Hey Guys,
I'm guessing Blake, Vincent and the other organizers are restricted from discussing the contest beyond the language of the guidelines. I think they are trying very hard to to be as inclusive as possible while remaining within whatever legal restrictions that might dictate how such a competition must be run.
As long as we are all cool about this, I'm sure that anyone who wants to get involved should be able to.
Good Luck! I hope I have the opportunity to see your work.

I have never been more bummed out that I only have an SD camera, considering I am madly in love with the 7D which I cannot afford. I wonder, if I uprez my SD footage to HD, does that count?
Phil Moore
Lonny,
You have tried to be reassuring that this contest will be accessible to people outside the US. But as you have said yourself repeatedly, it is based on an assumption of fair play. Would like to see something official from Canon or Vimeo with regard Non-US entrants.
Lonny Quattlebaum PRO
Hey Phil,
You're right I'm basing my assertion on the assumption that Vimeo wants to be fair, as well as a few other things. I doubt that Vimeo will be able to expand on the conditions of the competition beyond the Official Guidelines, but I know that they want this to be as open as possible.
I can also tell you that if you are considering participating, you'll need to enter with a valid US address and phone number.
I don't work for Canon or Vimeo, but I would hope that I could be considered a "trusted member of the community".

I have read through the terms and conditions of the competition and I am still a bit confused. I just want to be completely clear before moving forward on this.
I have some fast dollies planned and I'm afraid of rolling shutter issues with the 7d so would shooting on RED disqualify me from having the chance to win anything?

You can shoot with any HD camera (720p)

It's stated several times in the comments above and elsewhere. Reading between the lines, anyone from any country can enter. Worry about the residency rule once you win/become semi-finalist... there are ways around it.
As a UK resident, I'm entering the competition and couldn't afford to waste this time if I thought it would be disqualified.
