Why isn't the date or location prominent on any of those pages or on the "ads" that link to the festival/awards page? I shouldn't even have to click to know when and where.

I see it now well displayed on the main awards page. Still weird to me that it's not on the About page or other pages.

Your in Amsterdam... why would you ever want to leave???

Pay

A billion reasons:
- Its too small over here
- No opportunities over here
- People are narrow minded
- Seen every thing here
- Political situation is getting worse and worse
- Racist violence is getting worse and worse

and so on.

Evan Gallagher

Evan Gallagher

People are narrow minded everywhere and there is plenty or racism and violence here. Shit your government seems very open minded compared to the us government. No matter where anyone is they want to leave to go somewhere else... that hole grass is always greener bull.

Have you lived here? Do you actually know what the situation in my country is right now? I advice you to read this article, which is just a little piece of it all: soulmagazine.us/features/commentary/693-commentary-a-brief-look-at-the-changing-tide-in-european-politics

It has nothing to do with the grass being greener somewhere else. It has everything to do with the situation my country is in right now. And I wish not to live in it. I don't care where I end up, if it may be on a deserted island by myself, anything is better than staying here right now.

Open minded governement? You REALLY don't know what is going on over here. Read the piece please. As far as America is concerned, its moving forward slowly, with a black president and an actual set up for health care. Over here, we going backwards. Getting a right-winged political party in the government and having to pay for all my medical bills myself even though I pay tons of money for health insurance. SMH.

If you don't know about my country other than the "weed and ho's" please don't act like you know. I've been around the world and have experienced different cultures and governments.

u mad... im no politician nor do i claim to be anything near that, no point of arguing on the internet.

Evan Gallagher

Evan Gallagher

All i was getting at from the begging is you live in a beautiful place which Ive always wanted to visit... yes a large reason is because of the pot and yes i cant stand being here in America watching my friends get locked up for stupid pot charges while its perfectly fine to destroy your lungs with cig's or drink your liver away. And i wasn't trying to say the only reason you want to leave your country is "the grass is greener" but all contrys have something wrong going on and there will always be another country's who have better policies one way or another. But there is no country doing everything right... everything is fucked up somewhere one way or another. My bad if Ive upset you. But you have to admit both of our country's have it pretty good. There are far worse places to live in. I don't know shit about shit so ill just stop now.

Evan, what you don't seem to understand is that my WHOLE country is just as big as New York City. Your country is a million times bigger thus has a million times more opportunities to move around if you're not comfortable within your area. For me, moving from my area to another area within my country is like moving from Harlem to Queens. It doesn't do jack shit so to say.

I understand what you are saying but in no way can you compare my country to yours. And just because there are worse places in the world, doesn't mean the problems over here don't exist. Nor does it mean I cant make a change for myself in my life. I'm not the one to complain all the time but don't do shit about it. You asked me why I wanted to move and I told you. I aint mad, but you wanted an answer and I gave you one.

If you're so unhappy in America, why dont YOU move?

PS I hope you read the article. I always try to educate "ignorant" (no offense) americans about the political situation over here, seeing they think that this is fairy-tale land or something....

Evan Gallagher

Evan Gallagher

I did read the article and I will accept my title of ignorant... shit, Im an American. I would love to leave here but no money and no work wont get me far. The small size of countries over there seem so ideal for traveling. Its way to hard to respond without coming off as a jackass so i forfit.

Hi Evan and Pay,

While we encourage lively discussion, we do kindly ask that if the discussion veers away from the main subject of the blog post that the dialogue be shifted to an alternative platform such as private messages.

Thanks for your understanding,

Daniel

Damn $135 is the early special... I could throw 5's 27 times with that. Do the people with videos featured in the awards get to go for free?

Matt Burton

Matt Burton

Guys whats with the price, seriously !
I would guess you made an incredible amount from your submission fee's surly ?

Evan Gallagher

Evan Gallagher

maybe if no one goes they will lower the price next year?

Matt Burton

Matt Burton

I don't think it makes sense to hold an actual event surly this is just an internet festival ?

Matt Burton

Matt Burton

Totally flawed Idea holding the event in New york IMHO.
How the hell do you expect the real people who make video's to be able to jet off to across the globe for some extravagant networking event ?
Yeah it's a nice Idea if we were all made of money but hell most serious producers are spending all their money on production.
Also when did vimeo become American ?

Daniel Hayek

Daniel Hayek Staff

Hi Matt,
Vimeo has always been based in New York City. Sorry you're not pleased with our festival logistics, but we have a great program lined up and we think it's going to be a huge success on many levels.

Matt Burton

Matt Burton

So your saying Vimeo isn't a world wide community ?
That would be the point I am making !
I just feel disappointed at how commercialised you guys have become.
Like How you sent out your submission emails as personal messages but it seems everybody and their dog who ever uploaded a video got pretty much the same message.
It actually made me feel stupid for submitting my music video when I found out.

Daniel Hayek

Daniel Hayek Staff

Matt we sent those emails to a hand picked selection of Vimeo members. We are a world wide site but we must have our offices somewhere.

Matt Burton

Matt Burton

Daniel of course I understand you have to have your offices somewhere and why would anybody object to that ?
When I submitted my video to the festival I assumed (wrongly) that this was an online festival and not an event to held across the world from me.
I didn't see any information prior to submission that the festival would be held in America, was this something I missed ?
When you pick you festival winners will it matter what part of the world they come from ?
The reason I ask is, don't you think that people from other countries would like to attend the festival if they are nominated for an award ?
With this being the case then don't you think it's a tad unfair that you choose to hold the even at a fixed location outside the reach of most submitters ?
Please can you try and see this from our point of view (and I believe I speak for many others).
In regards to requests for submissions do you have a figure of how many requests you sent out ?
I'm guessing this was in the thousands but correct me if i'm wrong. A genius concept for generating revenue but just what exactly has the money paid for ?
Obviously it hasn't given us free entry into the event or has it ?
Forgive me my questions and my inquisitive mind I only seek answers where I see no clues :)

Hi Matt,
I totally understand your frustration. Before I worked at Vimeo, I lived in Wichita, KS. I'd always see these events happening in New York and felt left out because I couldn't afford to just take off work, hop on a plane, and go physically participate in the events I kept reading about.

I want to assure you that it is one of my personal goals to have more events in different parts of the world. The community staff is totally on board for traveling around, having meetups, vimeo offline events, dance parties, and festivals -- trust me.
But that takes major planning and a budget, and in business, you know how long that stuff takes sometimes. I promise, we are trying our best!

The Vimeo Festival and Awards is based in NYC, and there's an event in Amsterdam, too. This is the first Festival of this kind for Vimeo so we're learning a lot, but it's going to be absolutely amazing. The things we have planned are mindblowingly cool.

Dan and I are in charge of a small portion of the Festival and we're brainstorming ideas that will help folks who can't make it to the event still feel like they're participating. And if you have any ideas, feel free to message me and we'll chat about 'em.

As far as your other questions are concerned, I don't feel qualified to answer them, but I will pass them along.

I just want to point out that I'm so proud to be a part of a website whose members feel so passionately about connecting. It's a real testament not only to online relationships, but especially to Vimeo as a strong community.

I hope my response has helped clear some things up, Matt. And maybe we can chat later?

Matt Burton

Matt Burton

Andrea you are a massive credit to Vimeo and I am a big fan of yours believe it or not :)
Many thanks for your hart felt response and I appreciate your thought on my position.
My issues are mainly with the big heads of Vimeo as so often the corporate head of an organisation can rule it's workers in unchallengeable ways. Trust me I know first hand how this can happen and normally it goes unchallenged and sometimes even unnoticed until it's too late.
If I thought their was something you could do I would be formulating a plan but I fear it's out of our hands in this instance.
All I can do is raise my concerns and hope that perhaps my voice is herd in the right context and spirit.
Vimeo is it's user and this is why I will always continue to be a part of it.
You are the facilitator and your mark will always be felt by us so bear that in mind if sometimes forgotten x
