Staff Blog / Two new settings features for your Tuesday

Believe it or not we release new features and little feature improvements on a weekly basis. Sometimes they are really big, sometimes they are small. But each and every one helps improve the site and give you (hopefully) better options for your videos. So today I'm bringing to your attention two cool little improvements to the settings pages.

Granular Global Video Settings
A little while ago we released Global Settings, a feature that let's you easily change settings on ALL of your videos, including future videos you upload, at once. This feature allowed you to change the privacy, appearance, quality and licenses settings, without having to go to each video and do it manually. The thing was, you couldn't change the settings to each option individually, you could only update all the different settings options to all the videos. By our own account, it wasn't the best implementation and it caused confusion.

But we fixed it! As of today, each Global Setting can be updated individually. Yay! Want to update your privacy setting on all your videos? Go for it. Maybe you're a Plus Member and you want to make all your videos default to HD when embedded. Do it! Life on Vimeo just got a little easier for all you settings and preference junkies. Go to your Global Settings page and check it out!

New Comment Privacy
Vimeo is a huge community now. Over 6.7 million beautiful registered users! And boy do you guys love to talk! Yesterday we had a near record-breaking day with over 6500 comments. Of course, we also respect your privacy and we know sometimes you want to share a video without opening it up to public discourse. Previously, the only comment privacy was 'Contacts Only', but today we've gone one step further and now allow people to disable comments entirely. It's a small improvement, but given the wide range of people using the site, we understand this option is important. You can find the new settings on any video settings page or in Global Settings page.

I like the new features. Some screenshots would be nice. Many people like me are pressed for time. Getting a quick snapshot-visual would really help with recall when I log back into Vimeo.

I should be using it more than I have been. That is in the works. Vimeo is great...worth every penny what I've paid for as a plus member. The Vimeo logo can use a font upgrade...something that can project an extra boost beyond its simplistic style and appearance now.

So, the new settings are great. But can the Global Settings work for only the "future" videos? I have various videos that I don't wish to change and have set specific settings for them in the past. Can it just set the settings I globally want fo my "future" videos I upload? If not (and I don't see it), while its a great feature, it would mean I'd have to do a global change, then go back and set up my individual settings again, if you see what I mean? I want to set Global Settings for all my future videos without changing my previous video settings.

Trouble... I went to my Global Settings, selected to make my videos HD everywhere --- and all my videos were reset to the same settings on every level, not just the one I selected. All my passwords disappeared for example! I had to manually go through my videos and reset all my passwords. Early morning bug?

Its a "global" setting so it will change everything to the settings you have in the new Global Settings, regardless of what you had previously set. Your issue is similar to the one I've highlighted above. Its too "Global" for my taste I'm afraid, not likely to really use it.

Sorry if I was unclear but my issue was distinctly different - I changed only one parameter; "make all my videos HD", and with that one click ALL my parameters were reset, including a total reset of all my passwords...
