  • By now we are all well aware that climate change is a real and inevitable issue facing our world. Much has been done to help combat these issues, but there is still an uphill battle facing us when it comes to government legislation to secure the future of our planet. It is up to us, as citizens of a country largely responsible for these climate issues, to speak out and let our voices be heard that climate matters! And as we well know, images often speak louder than words. So here is where you come in:

As you may have noticed already, Vimeo is proudly hosting the Climate Matters Video contest!

To enter the contest, create a video that sends a message to congress concerning climate change. Videos should be 30 or 60 seconds in length and should not address any specific political movement or candidate. Tag the video with 'climatematters'. Read the contest rules for more information.

Winning entries will receive up to $3000 dollars in prizes and will also be broadcast on national TV. Judges (and there are some famous ones) will pick the winners based off of creativity, coherence of message, potential impact of message on political leaders, and the inspiring message.

This is your chance to let your voice be heard and stand up to congress on climate change. You only have one week left, so enter now!

will do.... the artic circle is receeding so fast as to put the territory under real threat of war, we need to speak up speak out and act. For thirty years we have been told about these issues.... the rapid and devestating climatic changes we see now are of a direct result of not listenning or having the vision to secure our own future!!

While amphibians get all the press as being sensitive to climate change, Coleoptera (beetles) are actually more sensitive to all environmental change (climate, habitat, invasives, etc) I'll be pulling something together on this worthy cause.

Is the competition global, or just for the U.S.A?
    • Lyall Fvrphy 1 year ago
      Global warming is global.
The reach of the United States is global.
This competition is only open to US citizens and that's a shame.

      :(
    • Leif Sjölund 1 year ago
      Lyall Furphy two wrongs..
The Contest is open to U.S. Citizens and at least 18 years of age.
That’s the first row of the contest rules.
      Furthermore..
You suppose not to say Global warming since we don’t have had any warming for the last ten years, but the opposite, so it has been change to just, change.
      Climat change..
But we suppose to, not mix it up with some other political change slogan,
      -right 

Not to rain on everyones parade, but this whole global warming bit is entierly in our own intrest. All this talk of save the animals (and beetles) is one large blanket pulled over everyone's head. As George Carlin put it, the planet and the animals will be fine, do we really think that the power that is mother nature couldnt just shrug us off like a flea on a dog. With volcanoes, hurricanes, blizzards plauges, disease etc we think WE have the right to "fix" it. we cant event get government to work for us, how do we expect to fix a planet? Our planet is constantly changing climate, and has for millions of years and live still thrives. I saw a documentary a while back called the great global warming swindle. Being the free thinkers and Vimeo artists are one should check it out.
Fortunatly i live in Texas, it cant get too much hotter than it already is here, save the sun exploding.

btw, i think the farmers almanac just released a 50 year report that say's the world is cooling.

      usatoday.com/weather/news/2008-09-09-farmers-almanac_N.htm

      and ice in Kenya?
      news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080903/od_uk_nm/oukoe_uk_kenya_weather

Someone should do a video pleading our world leaders not to tax us to death with thier planned "carbon tax"

      That i would vote for.

      And carrots...i like carrots.
      Cheers.
    • Cody Smith 1 year ago
Yeah, those Almanac guys sure know a ton about carbon emissions, the melting permafrost, receding glaciers, and the 5 hottest years on record all occurring within the last 10 years. You think they're scientists?

Global warming does not only mean higher temperatures, it means more extreme weather. More harsh winters, worse drought, increased hurricane (Katrina) ,tornados (2008 is on its way to breaking all time records for tornadoes), and tsunami activity.
    • Toejam 1 year ago
Extreme weather like fox news tell me all about... : /

the past 5 years here have actually been cooling.
2003 being the hottest, it's been a steady decline in temps since then and texas is hot and nothing has come close since 03.

i think more research is in order before cementing your decision to "clean up" the planet.
Considering not even our elected leaders believe in cleaning up as they have abstained from signing the Kyoto Treaty to reduce Emission by 61%

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyoto_Protocol

and i would trust a book aimed toward farmers, the ones who work the earth, over a rebuttal by a guy with a video camera.
    • Cody Smith 1 year ago
are you not also a "guy with a video camera"? one who supposedly knows all the facts?

your data is wrong. why would more than 160 nations have already signed the Kyoto Protocol if global warming wasn't real? this includes economically powerful countries such as britain, russia, france, and germany. but they're not america, so they must be mistaken.
in the earth's northern hemisphere (where most of the worlds land and people are located) 2005 was the hottest year on record.
march 2003 Gallup poll, 80% of americans called for "setting higher emissions and pollution standards for business and industry"
why? because despite only containing 5% of the world population, the U.S. is responsible for roughly 36% of overall greenhouse gas emissions.
good thing we withdrew from the Kyoto accord in 2001 (because it is "unfair" that developing nations like china and india will still be allowed to produce coal plants)
the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)--a scientific branch of the United Nations-- released a summary of a 2007 report that examined the effects global warming was already having on our planet. IPCC scientists explained greenhouse gases were being produced primarily as by-products of human activity, particularly the burning of fossil fuels. The report--more than 5 years in the making--was researched by thousands of volunteer scientists around the world, who later wrote and proofread it. The report was eventually presented to representatives from more than 110 governments--including the U.S.-- and it's findings received unanimous approval.

according to you, those thousands of scientists, 80% of the american public, and the 82% of the world's nations (160+ of 195) that have signed the Kyoto Protocol, are wrong. I may be just a guy with a video camera, but I have the facts to back my argument up. I cannot force you to believe in reality. I hope that one day you are cured of ignorance.
    • Toejam 1 year ago
Camera~yes~and what a fantastic line of work we are in, i wouldnt have it any other way.

      The difference is in bibliography.

i havent passed myself off as anyone who knows the facts, i just posted a comment about looking into the other half of the story. Not accepting what is pounded into our head daily without looking into the other half. The point of government is control and when the government tells me repeatedly what the "truth" is, dissent is my path. "All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent. " - T. Jefferson

      Below Soxiam posted this,

"Al Gore's not going to be rounding up Jews and exterminating them. It is the same tactic, however. The goal is different. The goal is globalization. The goal is global carbon tax. The goal is the United Nations running the world. That is the goal. Back in the 1930s, the goal was get rid of all of the Jews and have one global government. You got to have an enemy to fight. And when you have an enemy to fight, then you can unite the entire world behind you, and you seize power. That was Hitler's plan. His enemy: the Jew. Al Gore's enemy, the U.N.'s enemy: global warming. Then you get the scientists -- eugenics. You get the scientists -- global warming. Then you have to discredit the scientists who say, 'That's not right.' And you must silence all dissenting voices. That's what Hitler did."

sounds more correct to me than ever. I say "i believe global warming is NOT man made" and then some global warming toreador begins the onslaught of "correcting" my wayward opinion until he is blue in the face, never letting in the argument that he might be wrong, and being fed his daily programing because of a lack of a dissenting voice in the major public forums. A movie about global warming created by a POLITICIAN will never in my mind suffice for anything other than a bid for control over people and tax money, global warming or not, it could be about the fantastic benefits of Corn Syrup : / , or the mandating of the HPV vaccine, if the government tells me i MUST and WILL follow a dogma so controversial i will not, it's only American to not trust the government.

"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them." T. Jefferson

This could go on endlessly for the whole of this contest and i do not want to turn Vimeo into a youtube comment battle ground. A main reason for leaving youtube. Reply if you will i've said my piece and am done.

      one last quote.

"Think wrongly if you please, but in all cases think for yourself"
    • Cody Smith 1 year ago
So let me get this perfectly straight; in light of all the facts, scientific data, world opinion, and measurable instances of the effects global warming is already having on our planet, you respond to them with pure conjecture about how the UN wants to take over the world, instituting a global government? Al Gore and the UN are like Hitler; only they want to save our planet. What an evil, evil plan they have cooked up. What has been pounded into your head is conspiracy theory, and conclusion without investigation. And so, blatantly contradicting yourself, you commit the logical fallacy of Guilt by Association by claiming an opinion of any politician must be "a bid for control over people and tax money". Wasn't it you (and it was) who said earlier "i think more research is in order before cementing your decision to "clean up" the planet. Considering not even our elected leaders believe in cleaning up as they have abstained from signing the Kyoto Treaty to reduce Emission by 61%". Wow, it sure seems as though, in this paragraph, you really stand behind the decisions of our elected leaders. You know, the ones you don't trust. It's O.K., I know why you have bowed out of this argument: There's nothing left for you to argue. You have no facts, no data, and very little research to back up your wayward opinion. You are the one who will never consider he is wrong; you couldn't intelligently address one piece of data, even acknowledge it's existence in your beautifully crafted speech of speculation. You, on the other hand, have not once provided me with any piece of evidence, let alone one substantial enough to raise doubt in the mind of any logical human being. You have lost the argument, been backed into a corner and escaped into your sheltered life of perceived conspiracy. In the future, please refrain from resulting to the typical ad hominem attacks on human character instead of the issue at hand. Oh yeah, and maybe learn something about what you are talking about, before you talk.

      Regards

Enough of this trash. You present yourself like you're Al Gore's illegitimate kid. You spout numbers and claims but have yet to cite a source. You claim i am the "one who supposedly knows all the facts" but have made no claim other than my own, what information i have presented has been cited and never passed off as my own. You sir, have turned this from presenting information to some pointless personal attack. Just as you did with Old New Agers im sure you will continue down your one world one answer point of view and attack anyone who doesn't share what you consider to be fact, talking down to someone as if you are some great hero coming to save their feeble mind. Neither of us are in any position to fact-fully declare the current dogma that is Global Warming as fact or Hoax, present your data for others to see and let them decide, then go make your video about how awesome Al Gore's power consumption is in the fight for a global tax..err..i mean Global Warming foxnews.com/story/0,2933,369084,00.html

"the American Physical Society this month said "there is a considerable presence within the scientific community of people who do not agree with the (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) conclusion that anthropogenic CO2 emissions are very probably likely to be primarily responsible for the global warming that has occurred since the Industrial Revolution."

Again, you feel cornered and continue to attack my personal character. Pathetic.

      LOL
After your beloved quote, you failed to read
"[this statement] does not represent the views of the Executive Committee of the Forum on Physics and Society."
      and before that, it says
"The FPS Executive Committee strongly endorses the position of the APS Council that "Emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth's climate."
Just because they believe there is considerable presence, doesn't mean they themselves dispute global warming.
Christopher Monckton is not a scientist, just a journalist and a politician who only wants (in your opinion) "control over people and tax money".
Using your last link, comparing June 1979 to June 2008, there is significantly less ice. thanks for helping me prove my point.
      Sources? Here's one:
      sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/11/061104084951.htm
"The 35.4% rise in carbon dioxide since the late 1700s has largely been generated by emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels."
      Owch.
      My other sources include
Global Warming Right Now from Rolling Stones, bye Kathryn Schulz. You'd have to look it up, I'm not going to cite all of her sources for you.
So, your one scientific source blatantly contradicts itself. On top of that, you replied to me, even though you said you wouldn't, in a desperate attempt to justify your stubborn and clearly unsubstantiated claims with very few scientific sources.

You're right, I'm done trying to save your feeble mind. The planet; that's another story.

    • Cody Smith 1 year ago
please; the evidence is out there. there has not been one scientific, peer-reviewed journal that has disputed global warming. there have been hundreds of articles in magazines in newspapers disputing global warming, only to cause doubt in the minds of the people. this is happening, it is undeniable fact and there is no scientific data that will disprove it's existence.
do yourself a favor and do some research. or if you would like to take the easy way out, watch An Inconvenient Truth. It is a very well made film.
    • Toejam 1 year ago
Not to insight a youtube-esk text battle with Cody but, please do not do as he and take the global warming story as the one and only way things are. Global warming is a political device, created by politicians. Fantastic example of this is the same documentary Cody said you should watch, The Inconvenient Truth, created by a politician, sold to us by a politician, backed up by more politicians, never questioned just given a prestigious award and passed a long as fact.
The fact is, the world has always warmed and always cooled. just a few thousand years ago nearly the whole of North America was covered in ice, then "Global Warming" started and melted the ice, with out people.

As a free thinking human you should always challenge the answers given to you. Never believe a powerpoint presentation given by a politician until you have researched the other side of the story.

Now im not saying the world might not be warming, but i am saying it's not caused by what the politicians and their groups tell us its warming by. My reasoning for this is simple.
      1) What is the #1 source of heat in the whole of the solar system = The sun
      2) The sun has been more active in the last century then in any other recorded time.
      3) Politicians lie. Simple as that.

Here is the less publicized side of the story

      youtube.com/watch?v=5B3EoiU3zKA

      garagetv.be/video-galerij/blancostemrecht/The_Great_Global_Warming_Swindle_Documentary_Film.aspx

Show some melting ice, a few polar bears and everyone gets all worried. Tell them that their income tax is unconstitutional and they ask you what the constitution is.

      Cheers.
    • Soxiam staff 1 year ago
and since we're all in the spirit of making up our own minds and shedding lights on less publicized side of the story, here's an entry i found on glenn beck on wikipedia (the man behind the mentioned "the great global warming swindle"):

"On April 30, 2007 on his nationally syndicated radio show, Beck compared the convincement tactics used by global warming activists to those used by Hitler, specifically during the Holocaust:

Al Gore's not going to be rounding up Jews and exterminating them. That's what Hitler did."

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Beck

so a ahead and make up your own mind. for me personally? well, i think this glenn beck is just flat out crazy to feel the need to make a comparison between hitler and al gore to make his opinion.

And I too, share your opinion here Toejam. Not to mention its huge proposed Nuclear Power project.

But Toejam, didn't the ice sheets retreat TEN THOUSAND YEARS AGO due to so many American Indians driving around in their SUVs? Isn't that what Cody says, or is he just mum on this--dare I say: inconvenient truth.

      Oh, wait a minute:

"...and there is no scientific data that will disprove it's existence."

This is what Cody says, that there is no science that will sway him from his global warming religion. And this exactly what religion is, believing in something as a matter of faith rather than reality.

BTW, glaciers are retreating all over and yet, other glaciers are growing--OOOPS! The Artic ice cover is lessening and yet, the Antartic ice cover has grown--OOOPS again, my bad! And the followers also are mum on their priests being caught cooking (no pun intended) temperature measurements---OOOPS OOOPS OOOPS!!!

Don’t undermine the bees. No bees, no pollination, no fruit and vegetables

"Let's be clear: the work of science has nothing whatever to do with consensus. Consensus is the business of politics. Science, on the contrary, requires only one investigator who happens to be right, which means that he or she has results that are verifiable by reference to the real world. In science consensus is irrelevant. What is relevant is reproducible results. The greatest scientists in history are great precisely because they broke with the consensus..."

"........By now we are all well aware that climate change is a real and inevitable issue facing our world........"

In which case why are you hosting a competition that excludes the ENTIRE world, save for the US?

    • Cody Smith 1 year ago
i would guess because the US congress are the ones you're creating the message for. the rest of the world is already aware of global warming, the united states is ignoring it, and this is a call for the american citizens (the people who vote them into office) to express greater public opinion through film. it would be great if they included everyone, but our congress has already shown it doesn't care about the rest of the world..
    • Spudgun 1 year ago
Many thanks for your considered, frank and accurate response, Cody. I could also suggest that they don't care about their electorate either!

Here in British Columbia Canada we se climate change more than the rest of the Americas. Because our province has such a large impact taking place our current government has placed a new tax for green house gasses. We have what we call a carbon tax. So when ever you purchase gas for your car you the customer will pay more.
We also have other problems like sealice on wild fish that is some times out of control and is killing off the wild stalks. Not to mention the illegal over fishing from southern visitors who can and smoke their catch on site.;) Some think they were not caught on camera!
Any way's I think this is a great idea!

      I disagree with one winner.

This should be broken up in different subsections.

      What kind of climate change?
      Climate change of the mind?
How to make other people think something is true? Make it feel real, keep repeating, and finaly, they just believe it!

      How sad is this?
I feld really good by the vimeo culture, the easy way of joining it, the relax enviroment, just good, the normal way of speaking, no nonsens...
      Couldn't be better!
And than then intresting piece came up...

Blake Whitman, did you wrote this?
      Or just copy paste?

Climatologist are just PHD's trying to make a buck. They get federal grants to study things so they invent things to study. Forecasters can't even accurately predict the weather more than 4 hours in advance and now they want me to believe they can predict climate change years down the road. Yea Right!!!!

      I'll make a video of 10,000
Hummers idling for no reason at all.
Or I could just use the video of Al Gores'
3 limos running for hours (with the A/c on)
while they wait for him to finish one of his SAVE THE PLANET speeches.

Or, as I would,do since I am a CG artist, use computer graphics to render them.

No Global Warming, no CO2 accumulation, all gossip, or pinko scientists trying to alarm and disturb us. Or Russian KGB leftover secret agents trying to ruin our all wonderful American lifestyle.

5.0 size engines Hummer Jeeps, huge trucks, antiquated GM can only sell to power hungry redneck and about to go bankrupt because of competition.

Those feminine liberals creating these rumors of Climate Change lost their soul of real American male hood. Can not drink real though beer and ride their snow carts or motorcycles in forest preserve with powerful loud machines. Those are just a sissy Toyota
Hybrid drivers. Or maybe Jap agents trying to destroy GM.

All lies thirty percent food production of the world is lost who cares we have greasy Mac hamburgers. Africa experiencing famine because of our cars who cares they should pull themselves from the shoe laces if they have shoes. Banks collapsed no control. Privatization of wealth and nationalization of loss by same big multinationals who created the Global, environmental and economic mess.
They are trying to make us unhappy.
Just sing the jazz tune be happy I am happy.

I hope this doesn't come off as whining.

The entries should have been presented as thumbnails. By showing the whole video at size, the most recent posted are the ones that are most likely to be looked at, as only 3 or 4 appear at a time. Most people just don't care to dig through 15 pages, and will not see the earlier entries.

thanks for linking me to a google search, where i pulled this
      environment.newscientist.com/channel/earth/climate-change/dn11642

      and this
      realclimate.org/index.php?p=192

and you would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for those rotten scientists.

Funny how you picked links 3 and 5 (which support your viewpoint), but you fail to acknowledge the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th and 8th (which don't support your POV). I'll give you 6th (Rush Limbaugh is a pundit, and not a scientist). Also the 9th and 10th links support your POV. So, out of the top ten links, half support your POV. Doesn't sound like all the rotten scientists agree with you.

Does human activity have an impact on the climate. Sure. Any part of a system has an impact on that system. But there is still debate on the effect of humans, compared to other factors. There are respected scientists on both sides of the debate, and honest debate can't take place when there are governmental, financial and career impacts to holding one viewpoint.

Since it appears an English viewpoint would be considered more valid than an American (they did sign Kyoto after all), check out this nice piece of visual media linked below.

      channel4.com/science/microsites/G/great_global_warming_swindle/index.html

"First shown on Channel 4 in March 2007

This film by the documentary-maker Martin Durkin presents the arguments of scientists and commentators who don't believe that CO2 produced by human activity is the main cause of climate change.

It's a controversial film that was roundly attacked by some scientists and enthusiastically received by others, and the arguments it contains are an important part of the wider debate on the causes of climate change.

The film was shortlisted for the Best Documentary award at the 2008 Broadcast Awards."
    • Cody Smith 1 year ago
I'm going to keep this short, because I am growing wearing of this forum. It's honestly not funny, or surprising at all that I would pick links that supported my viewpoint. I'm sorry I didn't read articles from every google search on that page.

      1. That documentary is highly controversial, as much or more than An Inconvenient Truth. Which I remind you won Al Gore and the IPCC the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Without a doubt more of any honor than the 2008 Broadcast Awards.

Even so, I'm done trying to spit facts. Why, oh why, would it be such a bad thing for the nations of this world to reduce carbon emissions? What are the negative side effects? I don't see why we argue about this when, if global warming is indeed a product of human industry, we are completely fucked if we do nothing about it. If, as you say, global warming is completely natural and has nothing to do with us, what is the harm of creating new and advanced technology in order to promote cleaner industry, vehicles, and environmental practices? This might even slow down this "natural process", if only by a small amount. The economies of both the UK and Germany have demonstrated even the emissions caps mandated by the Kyoto protocol can be implemented while maintaining economic growth. There is no reason NOT to clean up industry and invest in renewable energy, especially when dealing with this evidence of a changing global climate. Reducing carbon emissions cannot hurt us, weather you believe in current global warming theory or not.

Ah the great HOAX of Man Made Climate Change. 2008 is going on record as one of the COLDEST years. In the past when global warming was being perpetrated by Al "MY DADDY MADE MONEY ON COAL" Gore. The Moon, Mars and Venus all where experiencing a GLOBAL temperature increase. We all hate unnecessary pollution. But these mislead environmental regulations are KILLING THE US economy. GUESS WHAT MOST ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS ARE ACTUALLY FUNDED BY OIL COMPANIES. Making it harder to build new REFINEMENT PLANTS IN THE US DRIVES UP THE PRICE OF OIL. The Russian economy depends upon the HIGH price of oil while the US depends upon the low price. TRY GOING NUCLEAR! oh wait cant do that.
WANT TO SEE REAL POLLUTION LOOK AT CHINA AND INDIA. Wonder why environmental groups are not targeting either countries? ANSWER THEY ARE GETTING MONEY FROM BOTH.
WAKE UP WAKE UP WAKE UP.
      LOOK IT UP FOR YOURSELF.

      Hi Blake,

Its unfortunate that these types of contests are only open to U.S. citizens, even though climate change is a global issue.

I was thinking of re-editing my "respect mother nature" video into a 1 min piece for this contest...then I read the rules. :(

Great idea for a contest anyway. Hopefully you can have one open to all nationalities one day.

      cheers,
      JON.
