New Features

Now you can share your videos on Twitter! Just click the Share icon in a video to launch the Share module.
  • Channel Notifications
Channel owners now have a new section in their channel settings to optionally receive emails for when someone posts a message to their shoutbox and for when someone subscribes to their channel. Adding moderators to your channel also now has an approval process, where both parties will receive emails when the request happens, and when the request is approved.
  • People Subscribed To Me
There is now a new page within your My Contacts where you can see what users are subscribed to you and what they are subscribed to (likes, videos, and/or appearances).
  • Featured videos for your group
Have any videos you want to show off in your group? You can easily add any 3 group videos to feature on your group homepage.
  • Featured videos on your profile page
Have any videos you want to show off on your profile page? You can easily add any of your 3 public videos to feature on your profile page. Try it now.
  • Removing Video Thumbnails
Everytime you upload a video, you get 12 thumbnails to choose from. Now, a month from the day you upload your video, we will automatically remove any unused thumbnails. But you will always be able to upload your own.
  • Improved Searching
We've been waiting for this. The toolbar search is now much more accurate.
  • Login and Join Vimeo Lightbox
Clicking on most login and join links will now trigger a lightbox overlay where you can quickly login or join Vimeo and stay on your current page.
  • Better referrer statistics
Now we record every page that videos get embeded on, check it out in the stats section to the right of any video page.
Everyone says they hate it, but everyone has a MySpace profile! We've added MySpace to the Sharing options.
  • Badge additions
You can now add channels and albums to any Badge that you create. Yipeee!
  • Daily Email Update
You can now receive a daily email full of what's happening in your Vimeo world. Sign up is located in your notifications settings.
  • Converting time during transcoding
Ted and Casey added a nifty little feature that will display the time remaining to convert your video during uploads.
  • New Hubnut Behavoir
From now on, the Hubnut will not auto-rotate when it is loaded on a page. This will only affect all newly created Hubnuts, not those that are currently used on other sites.
  • Search Channels
Now you can FINALLY search for Channels. Use the 'Search' box in the top navigation bar, make sure its set on 'Channels', and search away!
  • Posting to Flickr
It's back! You can once again post your videos to Flickr. You can also post albums. Do this by clicking on Share and navigating to the "Post this..." tab.
  • Expanded Tag Browsing
Clicking a tag from a video will bring you to an improved tag browsing experience. Now you can browse videos with that tag in your videos, all videos, your contacts' videos and more. Vimeo members who use that tag most are also noted.
  • New Avatar Feature
Clicking any "avatar" aka user portrait will bring up a menu of actions you can take regarding that user. Use this menu to add contacts, subscribe to videos, and send messages to users you see on Vimeo
  • Spam Filters
We've recently rolled out some great new spam filters that we think will help keep spammers off of Vimeo. Of course its impossible to stop ALL spammers, so if you ever see any send an email to Help@vimeo.com and we'll take care of it.
  • Add Multiple Email Addresses
Now you can add multiple email addresses to your account and then sign in with any of them using the same password. Just set one as your main address, verify it after we send you an email, and you're all set.
  • Yo Vimeo!

For my first post on the Staff Blog, it is my profound honor to announce our latest weekend project. In the wake of the success of our last weekend project where we asked you all to make a 5 second video, we felt extra generous this week and decided to give you a whole minute this time! That's right, one minute, sixty seconds, or the amount of time it took Daniel Hayek to do 99 pushups and eat 7 saltine crackers. Honestly.

So what's the catch? There is no catch! Actually, there is a catch. Several:

-- Videos must be exactly one minute.

-- No camera movement (no dollying, tilting, panning or zooming.) So, leave the Steadicam at home.

    -- Use original sound.

-- No editing whatsoever (no titles, no cuts, no nuthin')

For a little inspiration, check out Jelle Pothoven's video. Exactly one minute later give Antonio Lazarenni's a look.

We're also upping the ante! To the winner goes a brand spanking new Plus account (for Basic users) or 25,000 HD Embeds (for Plus members.) To the runner up an extra 1 GB of upload capacity (for Basic users) or 10,000 HD Embeds (for Plus members.)

Videos are due Tuesday night at midnight (EST.) Make sure to add your video to the Weekend Project Group and the 1 Minute Video Group.

    Have fun,
    Sam

    UPDATE:

First of all, on behalf of the whole staff, I'd just like to thank everyone for the huge turnout for this week's project. We received about 160 submissions, which makes this by far the most successful Weekend Project to date!

That said, you can imagine how difficult it was for us to narrow our decision down to two winners.

Without further adieu, it is my pleasure to announce our runner up and winner of 10,000 HD Embeds: Oscar Wilde Quote by Cecile Davis & Floofie Films. A nice experiment to create the illusion of motion with a stationary camera, plus a little Oscar Wilde thrown in the mix, very nice.

And the big winner of 25,000 HD Embeds for this week's project is Lights and Water by James Adamson. Simple yet vivid both visually and sonically, I thought the colors were going to drip off the monitor. Really stunning.

We'd also like to very honorably mention a couple other submissions: Traffic light by John Wiseman. A beautiful composition with lots going on offscreen and anticipation ebbing and flowing throughout. And 1MV by Ibrahim Serra because spinning down the Ganges with a man playing sitar and the sun setting off in the distance is just that sweet.

Thanks again to all who submitted. We hope you enjoyed this project as much as we did and we look forward to seeing your submissions in future Weekend Projects!

Hi Sam. Question: is "pending" a new thing? Could you elaborate on what that means since I've sent up video for the Weekend Projects before and never got "pending." Thanks in advance.
    • Sam Morrill staff 2 months ago
      Hi Alan,

It is a relatively new feature. We had to make the group "approval only" because some users were posting videos that didn't belong there.

    • Matt P. 2 months ago
He didn't add a new rule. The rule was there from the beginning. Trust me. I feel limited as well, but thems are the rules.

      Hey guys,

Just went through a bunch of vids added to the groups, so if you got a "pending" message before, you're probably good to go (unless you didn't follow the rules, but 99.9% of you did so it shouldn't be a problem!)

Guys, I just spent a ridiculous amount of time getting a video together (even though it was just a bit of a joke video), then when I was about to add it to the group I saw this -

With the chaos of everyday life consuming our senses, it is nice to sit back and enjoy moments and experiences that are often overlooked. This project aims to study the forgotten moments and times in life that we often pass by without acknowledging.

My video doesn't fit that description, although it meets all the other pre-requisites. So, learning experiences aside, I've just wasted my time. Which is kind of ironic I guess, talking about the chaos of everyday life and overlooking things.

Can I suggest that in the future all project aims be put with the other pre-requisites on the same page the project is first announced on?
    • Les Hillis plus 2 months ago
Good suggestion mate, sorry you wasted your time.

pending...it's been a while since I've done a Weekend Project, and I don't remember anything about my other video pending, is that relatively new? or did I just not notice it?
    • Piotr Bargiel 2 months ago
It happens sometimes if there are many entries. Some Projects are less popular, others more. Up till now there are 85 1-minute vids in Weekend Project group and 106 that aren't older than 3 days in 1-minute group (I actually don't know why the figures differ: "Make sure to add your video to the Weekend Project Group and the 1 Minute Video Group"). So, obviously this makes it the most popular Weekend Project ever. I remember my video pending 4 quite a long time during the Haiku Project, too, and the 1-minute one has over twice as many entries already. :)
