Aerial Filmworks is working with the Grand Canyon National Park to film the national park using the Cineflex V14HD. The gyro-stabilized aerial system uses an integrated Sony CineAlta HDC1500 and all footage was recorded 1080/23.98p at 4:4:4 to a Sony SRW1 deck on HDCAM SR tape stock.

Digital capture with an AJA Kona3 card to a MacPro 8 core with 17Gb RAM, and edited with Final Cut Pro.

The Cineflex was nose-mounted on a Bell 206B3 Jet Ranger helicopter. Permissions required about 8 months of paperwork and permits, along with daily updates to local air traffic control on flight days. The pilot needed to be specifically approved for the operation by the FAA and Department of Interior. We mapped reference points to the GPS and input sensitive condor nesting areas that we needed to avoid.

The Aerial Filmworks team believes in doing our part to maintain a carbon neutral planet. Through a "White Badge" partnership with TerraPass, we purchase carbon offsets for every hour of flight time that our Cineflex equipment is on a helicopter.

Introducing the first user-generated HD Video Contest where photographers become filmmakers, and we all see beyond the still. To kick off the contest, Canon asked me to interpret what story I saw beyond the still, and to tell that story with the new Canon EOS 7D. My short film will be the first chapter of seven, each ending with a still photograph for the next aspiring filmmaker to interpret. Posing the question to everyone, what do you see beyond the still?

My short film will premiere on January 7th on Vimeo, and the contest will begin January 15th. I look forward to seeing what everyone creates! More info coming soon!

“I don’t think it’s about marketing to your demographic. It’s about making what we make as discoverable as possible so that the audience can find it,” affirms Susan in Webisode 9, the enlightening final bow for this provocative FilmFellas cast.

Joe opens the discussion by suggesting that the iPhone may be the audience’s preferable tool for viewing content, since it approximates the online viewing experience. Susan highlights the differences between push marketing and pull marketing, and why she promotes the latter. Kris argues that her generation is too savvy to be seduced by advertising, while favoring the exposure to media offered by social networking sites. Joe provides an in-depth explanation of why he chose to make his new film, Alexander the Last, available to 45 million homes through Video On Demand, while simultaneously premiering it at the SXSW festival. As the cast proposes various ways films could be made discoverable online, Susan reiterates her belief that Hollywood has given up on marketing to her generation. Shot over a couple days in New York on my HMC150 with Redrockmicro M2 adapter and rails system/shoulder mount.

Lenses:
Nikon 50mm F1,4 (only a handful of shots)
Tokina 80-200mm F4 (the majority of the video)
The zoom is an absolutely beautiful lens I picked up on ebay for twenty bucks, and I think I prefer its images to the 50mm.

Mostly recorded in 720/60p and subsequently conformed to 24p in Cinema Tools.

Some grading done with 3-Way Color Corrector.

Tripods used: my shoulder, park benches, the ground, and more of my shoulder. It is an extremely heavy setup (around 10lbs) and very difficult to fiddle with focus and zoom and camera iris and lens aperture and other controls all with one hand, while supporting its entire weight with only the other arm. And some of the time I had the carrying case on the other shoulder!

I've been considering the GH1 as a replacement but not totally convinced I could get the same filmic visuals out of it...
