Catherine Jo Ishino is an Associate Professor of Design, who teaches and lectures in Design Studies, Time-Based Communications, and Foundation Design in Toronto. Also she is a design writer and video oral historian of graphic designers.

ACADEMIC CAREER
In 1995 Catherine Jo Ishino was recruited by Michigan State University, with a full scholarship and Distinguished Fellowship. Here she began her career in the Academy by pursuing her Master of Fine Arts degree. After graduating in 1998, Catherine taught at the University of Minnesota, where she became promoted and tenured to an Associate Professor of Graphic Design in 2004. She also was the Head of the Motion Graphics Area and served as the Graphics Area Coordinator for one year.

Moving to Toronto Canada in 2007, Ishino sought to concentrate on her design writing by pursuing a second post-graduate degree. In 2009 she obtained a Master of Arts in Communications and Culture through a joint program at Ryerson and York Universities. Also Catherine began teaching graphic design at York University and George Brown College.

TV NEWS DESIGN CAREER
Prior to her academic career, Catherine garnered a National Emmy and Peabody award for her art direction. During CNN's beginnings in Atlanta, she began working in video news graphics. One year later Ishino moved to New York City, where she served as an independent designer at NBC and ABC News operations. Then a new joint venture between ABC News and Westinghouse began, called Satellite News Channel. CBS' former 60 Minutes Art Director hired Catherine as his Assistant Art Director. She was later promoted to their Associate Art Director. When SNC went 'off-the-air,' Catherine was hired at the newly minted The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, where she was brought in as their Assistant Art Director. Two years later she became promoted to its Art Director, where Ishino remained until 1994. From 1985 to 1994, Catherine also served as a freelance Creative/Art Director and Video Designer to an independent TV production company, named Globalvision, working on human rights' weekly TV shows, as well as documentaries and music videos.

Formerly, Ishino was an Emmy and Peabody award-winning video graphic designer and art director. She worked in the television news business for 14 years. Her career began in Atlanta at CNN and then she moved to New York City where she worked at NBC and ABC News operations. In 1983 Ishino was hired as the Assistant Art Director at The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour. She was promoted to Art Director in 1985, where she remained until 1994. Catherine also served as the creative director and designer at the independent human rights TV production company, Globalvision, from 1985-1995.

In 1995 Professor Ishino was recruited by Michigan State University, with a "Distinguished Fellowship," to attain her Master of Fine Arts with a specialization in graphic design. After graduating in 1998, Catherine taught at the University of Minnesota Duluth where she worked for eight years. In 2001, she became promoted to a tenured associate professor.

Moving to Toronto, Canada in the fall of 2007 to study design writing and criticism as well as pursue a graduate degree in Communications and Culture at Ryerson/York Universities’ joint program, Ishino matriculated in fall 2009.
