The Sarasota Chalk Festival is a celebration of the ephemeral art of street painting where artists use pastel chalk as their medium and the street surface as their canvas to create over-sized masterpieces over the course of 2 - 5 days as the public is invited to watch the creative process. Hundreds of other artists participate on our stages, in "Going Vertical" and in a multitude of ways from dance, poetry, opera, acting, magic, and much more.
The Sarasota Chalk Festival started in 2007 as a regional event. By 2009 the festival had gone national with over 100 artists participating. In 2010 the festival became the First International Street Painting Festival in the United States and last year attracted in one location the most renowned artists in the field of street painting with over 500 artists participating and approximately 200,000 guests attending the week-long event.
The Festival is organized by the Avenida de Colores, Inc. 501c3 nonprofit that is managed by an entirely volunteer staff and Board of Directors. The festival only functions with the generous support of donations and its sponsors, artists, volunteers and particularly the visitors that bring the festival to life.
