The Annual Vsesvit Readings were begun in 2011 to celebrate the art of literary translation and the mission of the journal Vsesvit (The Universe), the oldest active literary journal in Ukraine. Founded in 1925 by Oleksandr Dovzhenko, Vasyl' Blakytnyi, and Mykola Khvyl'ovyi, the journal has translated over 4,000 works from 98 literatures of the world into the Ukrainian language. This video was a part of 'Verse in Vision,' an exhibition of prints by Taras Shevchenko mounted by Cambridge Ukrainian Studies at the Michaelhouse Centre in April-May 2009. It features scenes from a Soviet Shevchenko biopic as well as images of Shevchenko's drawings and paintings before and during his exile to Central Asia.

Featuring the best of Ukrainian cinema from its beginnings to the present day, the Cambridge Festival of Ukrainian Film is headlined this year by Oleksandr Dovzhenko's silent Soviet spy thriller The Diplomatic Pouch and his early comedy Love's Berry. These films, screened at the Cambridge Arts Picturehouse, will be accompanied by a live piano performance from Geoff Page.
