From Mel's Fish to Great!Lakes Candy
When we purchased Mel's Fish in early 2007, an era was ended for Mel's Fish, a long standing & popular smoked fish shop in Knife River, MN. Transforming the shop from fish to candy was lots of work, but great fun too. It's exterior needed little change as it was the perfect design for a candy shop. Inside, we made more changes, but kept Mel's original 1950's fish case, a wonderful display case for our candies. This wonderful candy store is located along Scenic Highway 61 along Minnesota's North Shore. This store is a third generation candy maker that originated in Minnesota's Iron Range. Gust Canelake passed on his recipes and his family still makes the candy on site at this great roadside shop . We make a stop there every year and we each have our favorites, red licorice wheels, air candy, caramels, and so much more. It is a must stop just for the atmosphere not to mention the candy.

At the Knife River beach, campfires, agate collecting and gathering is very popular. Right behind the beach is the Knife River Marina where a variety of boats are moored. Some of the last commercial fishermen use this marina as a base for their fishing vessels. This community has a long history that goes back to the first days of logging and commercial fishing on the North Shore. In fact, the first recorded American total-loss shipwreck on Lake Superior occurred at the mouth of the Knife River in 1838. The village was also an important stop for both of the major railroads that used to serve the area.
Today, Knife River remains a quiet village, but visitors and residents alike enjoy a public beach, restaurant, and excellent fishing. In addition, the Knife River Marina is a full-service marina operated by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
