This film pays homage to the work of Korean craftsman Kim Soo-Young, winner of the YÉOL Award for Craftsman of the Year 2013. The intense heat required to forge his materials are juxtaposed with the harsh Korean winter landscape in which Kim Soo-Young lives and works.
Korean folk and rock singer, Hahn Dae-soo, recites an original poem written by Yoon Jiyeong that has been inspired by the footage from this film. The music is a track called "her soft circumference" by offthesky. The track can be purchased through bandcamp.com
Phil Hutty spins metal in Oxford, New Zealand. I shot and edited this promo for Phil as a way of testing out the Panasonic GH3 with a Voigtlander 25mm lens.
Craftsmen turners have provided articles of use and decoration in many parts of the world for well over two thousand years. Although there are many possibilities for variation, the turning process, in essence, involves the rotation of a firmly held piece of wood (or bone, metal, stone etc.) and working its available surfaces with cutting tools.
The machine which accommodates these three actions, holding, rotating and cutting, is the lathe. The cutting tools may be hand-held or clamped in special frames that can be controlled mechanically, the method usually adopted by the metal turner. This film is a small glimpse in the life of such men... The Master Metal Turners!!
