This is "Part II" of the project I tried to film in September with Fabi, Johannes and Neal. At that time we got hit by bad weather and considered it not worth filming because, well, we couldn't really see anything.
One month later we finally got some stable Autumn weather. The snow that had been there had melted and the classic inversion weather arrived. Conditions were perfect.
Riders are Fabian Gleitsmann and Tobias Leonhardt.
Stills and film taken using a Panasonic GH13 with lenses 7-14mm f4, 20mm f1.7 and Nikkor 50mm f1.8.

Filmed at the end of November 2010 somewhere in Bavaria. Riders are Max Schumann and Maxi Dickerhoff. Snow cover was about 50 or 60cm. With hikers trampling down the snow and making a trail then some good riding is still possible. Took us 2hrs of pushing and carrying to get to the trail head but, once again, the up hill grunt was well worth it. Considering these guys were running with normal downhill tyres (without spikes) then this is some of the fastest mountain trail snow riding I have seen. Some sections of the trail are pretty exposed too, kiss your ass good bye if you fuck up.
Filmed using two GH13 bodies and lenses:
Panasonic 7-14mm f/4,
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8,
Nikkor 20mm f/2.8,
Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95.
The 20mm Nikkor was attached to a Lensbaby "Tilt Transformer" to get the focus shift in the first couple of scenes.
The Voigtlander 25mm was used in the forest near the end and was a "life saver" at getting some usable footage at 4pm in a dark forest. The quality and feel…
This video shows Max Schumann riding from the summit of the Zugspitze down to the Knörrhütte and was filmed in October 2011. Conditions were finally perfect with very stable weather and dry rock. We left the hut at 3am, topped out at 6am and waited for sunrise. Max began his descent at about 7am and just about got to the bottom before any hikers arrived. Some of the very technical sections, such as the rock slab beside the hut and some steep steps lower down were probably ridden for the first time that day.
Filmed using a Panasonic GH2 with lenses,
Panasonic 7-14mm f/4
Nikkor 50mm f/1.8
Nikkor 85mm f/1.8
Stills were done using a Nikon D700 and lenses,
Nikkor 24mm f/1.4
Nikkor 16mm f/2.8
Nikkor 85mm f/1.8
Intro Music is "Dusty Universe" by Epic Soul Factory Vol.1 and
the rest of the movie is Brad Sucks "Look and Feel Years Younger".
Some video footage here from an attempt to film Fabian Gleitsmann and Johannes Pistrol riding the upper section of the Alpspitze. Weather was coming in on the way up but we (optimistically) thought that it would clear later. Miraculously, we hit 10 minutes of clearing weather and amazing light on the summit but then it closed in bad and we had to abandon filming. Part 2, and some real action, should be coming along as soon as we get some of that amazingly stable autumn weather.
Filmed using a Panasonic GH13 with lenses 7-14mm, 14-140mm, and title picture shot with a D700 & Nikkor 16mm fisheye.
High alpine trail free-riding with Fabian Gleitsmann in a fabulous mountain area close to Garmisch. It's a 4 hour bike and hike into this mind-blowing area but once there the effort is definitely worth every drip of sweat. The descent trail is one of the finest known to man-kind. Awesome with a capital "F"!!
Video and stills captured using a Panasonic GH13 and lenses 7-14mm and 14-140mm, supported by a Gitzo carbon 6x and a Novoflex ball head.
Just think about it… What if you were trapped under something heavy and the mouse was out of your reach? Scary, right? That's exactly why we have these keyboard shortcuts so you can still use Vimeo until the help arrives.
