The Passion Project is an ambitious and comprehensive 30 minute film that positions the concept of Passion as a central driver behind how colleges--including teachers, classrooms, and the institution itself--can best support student success. The film is a sophisticated response to a trend we see in education of focusing on Completion and Pathways, sometimes at the expense of more deeply understanding the capacity, fears, and life situations of our students.
The Passion Project was created by a Chabot College student, Skye Ontiveros. She did a great deal of research into the topic as well as conducting lengthy interviews with 9 community college students, where they delved into numerous topics that help shape the movie:

What is Passion
What factors influence Passion: Society, Family, Media, School
How Time and Passion intersect
The Classroom's role in nurturing Passion
Brain theory behind how Empathy and Cooperation create Passion
The individual student's relationship and responsibility to Passion: self reflection, Discussion, Self Awareness, Humility, shaping a true Ego, stepping towards Citizenship, Action, Service.

The film is serving as a primary document to guide the creation of a new First Year Experience course at several community colleges in California and beyond. The film also is a primary document supporting the work of Acceleration in Context because the film embodies AIC's philosophy that institutional change must start with rethinking how we understand our students, and ourselves as educators.

+ More

For the last 7 years Chabot College students, with faculty support, have been creating educational documentaries. Acceleration in Context, a grant-funded initiative that offers comprehensive professional development support to colleges across California and the nation, has continued in this vein by making Student Voice a central part of its work. These films, co-produced by students at Chabot and students working for AIC,, investigate all aspects of community college life, from classroom pedagogy and curriculum to student services. One important feature of the films is that Student Voices are front and center. The students filmmakers also inject wit, creativity, and strong points of views into these films. These are not your typical educational videos!
Chabot teachers Sean McFarland and Tom deWit are co-Directors of Acceleration in Context, an initiative that offers professional development support to faculty around California and the nation. The movies you see here play an important role in that work.
