1. Short clip of Legong Dance in Ubud, Bali. Shot on the D90 with 18-55 kit lens. The 2 set of spotlights makes this indoor footage a success. Focusing is fast with ample lighting but its still a challenge getting the dancers in focus when they move away from the "focus zone".

  4. DiDik NiNi ThoWok is a famous Indonesian master dancer. A world class cross-gender artist.

In 1999 we made a 1 hour inflight video magazine for all Garuda airplains. For this item we used my first Sony DV VX1000 camera on a Steadicam Jr. We were invited at his danceschool in Yogyakarta Java Indonesia. He showed us after an interesting Balinese dance training, this most amazing dance: two dancers in one. Jepindo Walang Kekek, a dance that draws fantastic techniques from Japanese dance and from the Indonesian dance Tari Dwimuka, two-faced masked dance, to portray two different characters that may co-exist in one person. I was glad to get the opportunity to film this in the mirror so you can watch both sides at once. Jepindo Walang Kekek also borrows movements from Balinese dance Legong Bapang in the Saba style.

For the extreme close-ups I used a macro +3 lens. Origional DV Footage captures with Canopus DV Storm Edius card Upper field first, 1.0296 Pal DV None and 1024x576x24 Double Rendered in Sony Vegas MPG4 Progressive scan.

  5. A video on Casa da Música's Robotic Gamelan, developed by myself, José Luís Azevedo and Miguel Ferraz in 2008/09. It started as an evolution of 'Lula' - vimeo.com/1379563 . The sound is awful, sorry about that!

A network of several independent robots play some of the javanese gamelan instruments: 2 bonangs, 2 demungs, 3 kenongs, 1 saron, 2 peking and 1 slentem, some gongs and an additional slentem in the near future. This network is controlled by a computer sending serial information using Max/MSP.

In this specific case, all the robots are being played using custom controllers made out of an Ikea salad bowl, an Arduino and two ultrasonic distance sensors.
