1. By understanding how our behavior affects our bodies, we are able to understand the affect our actions have on nature.

Gunter Pauli will be one of the many speakers at the Sustain Our Africa 2012 Conference held in Cape Town from 24-26 October.

  2. On World Rhino Day the Green Renaissance team - greenrenaissance.co.za together with a few passionate volunteers made and erected 282 wooden crosses at Sea Point in Cape Town to symbolize the rhinos killed this year in South Africa.

When you have to make this many crosses you realize just how many rhinos have been killed, and walking through the crosses helps one to fully understand the plight of our Rhinos.

One rhino killed is one rhino too many.

Sadly the crosses have now been taken down, not having been up for even 24 hours. The positive response we received about this campaign has inspired us to do more though, so watch this space.

    The Guardian:

The Guardian follows a young environmental ambassador with a tangible enthusiasm for birds, conservation and education. Tribute “Birdie” Mboweni lives in solitude on Dassen Island in order to protect and study the largest colony of African Penguins in Africa. Her work is vital to the survival of this species which could be facing extinction within only 10 years and her story, is one of inspiration as she seeks to “plant the seed” of conservation in others. As one of the finalists of the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy, her role as a conservation ambassador has recently been realized with a trip to Canada to represent SA at the G8/G20 Youth Summit May 2010.
The documentary explores Tribute’s unique role on the island as well as, her own personal journey of discovery and guardianship. Tribute guides the audience through her experiences as a conservationist, illuminating with her quiet passion what it takes to truly connect with nature and the importance of preserving the beauty of this world.
Today only 25262 breeding pairs of the African Penguin remain.
The Guardian is produced by African Renaissance Productions as part of the Caretakers series for STEPS and SANBI.

  4. Path into the Future:

Kerri Wolters, somewhat of a “vulture whisperer” is a determined presence in the conservation world. Her ability to connect with and handle these birds as well as, to conduct wild captures, puts Kerri among the very few who recognize and advocate the vital role vultures play within society. Kerri takes us on a Path into the Future exploring not only threats on vulture survival, such as the muti trade and urbanization but the wealth of knowledge and freedom that these birds can pass on to the human race.
Taking a unique opportunity to paraglide, Kerri goes beyond the confines of the vulture enclosure and gains a perspective of life through the eyes and wings of the birds. Gliding with these misunderstood creatures Kerri’s eyes are further opened to the amount of beauty and wonder the modern world misses out on, she invites us as individuals to experience nature and thus gain an understanding of why this planet so deserves our protection.
Today only 2900 breeding pairs of the Cape Vulture remain worldwide. Path into the Future is produced by African Renaissance Productions as part of the Caretakers Series for STEPS and SANBI

CareTakers is a documentary film project about South Africa's rich natural heritage, and the dedicated people who care for it. In the face of overwhelming biodiversity loss, habitat degradation, and human-induced climate change, there is a pressing need for clear calls to effective action. These films are intended to educate, advocate and inspire people to become active parts of the solution.

The project has been launched with a series of eight short films that profile some inspiring South Africans working to protect our natural resources. These films were funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund with a view to profiling our country and our people. In the making, we met ordinary South Africans doing extraordinary things, in spectacular and diverse environments.

These eight films, which have hardly scratched the surface of South Africa's wealth of cultural and biological diversity, will form the basis for an educational programme. Using the STEPS methodology of facilitated screenings, and targeting primarily the youth, the films will be augmented by other learning materials, and will be taken pro-actively into the learning domain.
