1. 'Mickey on Broadway,' 2011, poster markers, spray paint and plastic on wall by Victor Ekpuk at Hillyer Art Space in Washington, DC.

"This piece was a site-specific drawing performance. Embarking on this project knowing that it would be wiped off after four weeks led me to ponder existential issues. I view the act of creating and erasing this art as a metaphor of the human condition in which life is a stage. We all perform and eventually step off, to exist only in memory or to be forgotten."

  2. Youth Diaspora Voices: Sadak Abukar

Sadak Abukar is a young Somali-American refugee who arrived in the USA when he was 12 years old. This documentary short shows how this young man has not only overcome the enormous challenges that come with being a refugee from a conflict zone like Somalia, but also how he has had a positive impact on other young refugees in the Somali-American community around his home in Maryland. Too often we hear media reports of refugee youth causing or getting into trouble. Abukar's life tells a very different story - one of mentorship, commitment to family and community, and hard work.
