1. I am honored to have met and created this beautiful project with two very inspirational human angels. They have authored one of my favorite books, We Are Human Angels; and to meet and share time and creative energy with them has been a beautiful, uplifting experience. In October 2012 we embarked on an epic project to capture Australia through the mediums of timelapse photography and slow motion. The journey has been dedicated to this purpose. We’ve travelled by car, sea and air in excess of 43,000 kilometres, taking more than 300,000 photos. The hours have been long, the distances travelled have been vast but the landscapes have been inspirational. I’m thrilled to show you MADE IN AUSTRALIA in a way that is rarely captured.

I’m also thrilled that BOY ROBOT has graciously given me permission to use their soundtrack, LIVE IN VANILLA, as the score for this short film. I think that it complements the Australian landscapes perfectly. The music can be purchased at itunes.apple.com/album/rotten-cocktails/id69903493

Many people and businesses need to be thanked for their invaluable contribution to the project.

Most importantly, I’d like to say a huge thank you to my assistant, Sarah. Her contribution has been immeasurable.

To the many hotels, motels, friends and relatives that provided accommodation along the way, thank you. To the businesses that welcomed us, thank you. I urge you to support them in your own travels. Their details are listed on my website.

To the providers of photographic equipment, thank you. In particular, Western Digital, Lexar Professional, Lensbaby, Lowepro, Joby, Velbon and Rode.

  5. My three favourite things in the world are mountains, aurora and snow. In early 2012 I got all three of them in spades when I spent nine weeks in the frozen north of Canada's Yukon Territory, thanks to the generosity of my hosts Andrea and Florian Lemphers.

With four cameras and dozens of lenses, tripods and a truck full of extreme cold weather gear, I journeyed across the Yukon and chased every gap in the clouds I could find. Three terabytes and a long learning curve later, this video is short compilation of some of the best footage I captured during my aurora adventures.

    Details about this video:

    Cameras: 2 * Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 1100D (aka Rebel T3), Canon 5D.
    Lenses: Canon 24mm f1.4L I & II, 14mm f2.8L, 10-22mm f3.5-5.6.

Motion Control: Vixen Polarie, Dynamic Perception Stage Zero Dolly and a custom controller developed jointly with Fred Vanderhaven which provides pan/tilt motion control and most importantly almost fully automated day-to-night twilight exposure control. The automated aspect is particularly important in the Yukon - a long twilight at -30 degrees means you can't be standing by adjusting the camera the whole time, especially when there are three other cameras to operate.

Processing: RAW image sequences have been processed using Lightroom and LR Timelapse, then rendered with After Effects and Premier Pro.

You can read more about my adventures in the Yukon on my blog: philhart.com/tag/yukon-aurora

I set my talented friend Dean Roberts (of 'The Dirt Floor' band and 'Lithostylis' wines) the challenge of recording music for the video. I hope you enjoy the rockin' soundtrack he came up with.
