These films have all met the following requirements:

-5 minutes in length
-Narrative with a beginning, middle, and end
-Some character meeting his/her/its death by a doorknob [creative interpretation of this criteria is the name of the game]

Ithaca College professor emeritus of cinema and photography Gustav "Skip" Landen started the Golden Doorknob competition in 1970 and continued it until his retirement in 1991. Back in those days the films were silent, black and white, and all of the Park School's film students had the same assignment: make a very short film that presents the most imaginative way to kill someone with a doorknob.

In 2009, alumni who fondly remembered making Doorknob Films while at the school revived the tradition, offering a cash prize. The award has steadily become a big deal in the film school- the 2011 competition received 26 entries.
