Our Reasons to Believe Scripture passage for today is 1 Thessalonians 5:20-22. It reads, "Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil."

Our Reasons to Believe quote for today is from John Lennox. He said, "We have only to see a few letters of the alphabet spelling our name in the sand to recognize at once the work of an intelligent agent. How much more likely, then is the existence of an intelligent Creator behind human DNA, the colossal biological database that contains no fewer than 3.5 billion "letters" - the longest "word" yet discovered?"

Our Reason to Believe powerpoint today is titled "The Argument from Efficient Causality for the Existence of God" (part 3) from "The Handbook of Christian Apologetics" by Peter Kreeft and Ronald K. Tacelli:

Why not have an endless series of caused causes stretching backward into the past? Then everything would be made actual and would actually be --- even though their causes might no longer exist.

First, if the kalam argument is right, there could not exist an endless series of causes stretching backward into the past. But suppose that such a series could exist. The argument is not concerned about the past, and would work whether the past is finite or infinite. It is concerned with what exists right now.

Even as you read this, you are dependent on other things; you could not, right now exist without them. Suppose there are seven such things. If these seven things did not exist, neither would you. Now suppose that all seven of them depend for their existence right now on still other things. Without these, the seven you now depend on would not exist --- and neither would you. Imagine that the entire universe consists of you and the seven things sustaining you. If there is nothing besides that universe of changing, dependent things, then the universe --- and you as part of it --- could not be. For everything that is would right now need to be given being; but there would be nothing capable of giving it. And yet you are and it is. So there must in that case exist something besides the universe of dependent things --- something not dependent as they are.

And if it must exist in that case, it must exist in this one. In our world there are surely more than seven things that need, right now, to be given being. But that need is not diminished by there being more than seven. As we imagine more and more of them --- even an infinite number, if that were possible --- we are simply expanding the set of beings that stand in need. And this need --- for being, for existence --- cannot be met from within the imagined set. But obviously it has been met, since contingent beings exist. Therefore there is a source of being on which our material universe right now depends.

  2. 1. According to the Jerusalem Post, a senior Israeli military official said the Islamist Hamas movement is probably not responsible for a recent upsurge in rocket fire out of Gaza where it rules, but will be made to suffer if the salvoes continue. The official, who declined to be named, said Hamas should intervene to squash the violence, which he blamed on smaller militant groups backed by Iran. Hamas accused Israel on Thursday of exacerbating tensions and said it bore full responsibility for the renewed troubles. After months of unusual quiet along the fence that separates southern Israel from the Gaza Strip, some 20 missile launches have been detected in the last month, with five fired towards the Israeli city of Ashkelon overnight. Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system knocked out all five projectiles and the military responded with a series of strikes across Gaza, reviving memories of 2011 and 2012, when such tit-for-tat firing became the norm.

    2. According to Reuters, in a statement that suggested a re-run of a sharp escalation in tension last year, North Korea has demanded that South Korea and the United States halt annual military drills due in February and March, saying they were a direct provocation. In 2013, North Korea said it would retaliate against any hostile moves by striking at the United States, Japan and South Korea, triggering a military buildup on the Korean peninsula and months of fiery rhetoric. The reclusive North has regularly denounced annual drills such as 'Key Resolve' and 'Ulchi-Freedom-Guardian' staged by South Korea and United States as a prelude to invasion.

    3. According to the Press Trust of India, at least 16 people have been killed and 40,000 have fled their homes after torrential rain triggered flash floods and landslides on Indonesia's northern Sulawesi island. Rivers on the island's northern tip overflowed and burst their banks, sending torrents of water surging through the city of Manado and surrounding areas that swept away poorly-constructed houses and vehicles. People waded through waist-deep water to get to safety, while some took to rubber dinghies to escape the rapidly rising flood waters. Many of those displaced took shelter in government buildings and churches in the Christian pocket of Muslim-majority Indonesia. Indonesia is regularly affected by deadly floods and landslides during its wet season, which lasts for around six months.

    4. According to Reuters, China's Defence Ministry said it has flight-tested a hypersonic missile delivery vehicle in a move that was scientific in nature and not targeted at any country. A Chinese military build-up has raised regional jitters. Many countries in Asia have welcomed a stated U.S. intention to shift more attention and military assets back to the region. They are beefing up military spending and ties with Washington. The Beijing Defence Ministry said in a faxed response to Reuters, "Our planned scientific research tests conducted in our territory are normal. These tests are not targeted at any country and at any specific goals." The statement confirmed a report by the online Washington Free Beacon newspaper that the hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV) was detected flying at 10 times the speed of sound over China last week. A spokesman for the Pentagon said it was aware of the test. The Free Beacon said the test made China the second country after the United States to have successfully tested a hypersonic delivery vehicle able to carry nuclear warheads at a speed above Mach 10 -- or 7,675 mph.

    5. According to The Associated Press, state wildlife officials are trying to figure out why all the fish have died in a northern Nevada marina where the stocked fishery has flourished since the man-made lake was created nearly 15 years ago. An estimated 100,000 trout, bass and catfish have died over the past month in the Sparks Marina along U.S. Interstate 80 east of Reno, apparently the result of a dramatic, unexplained drop in dissolved oxygen levels. Scientists say a bitter cold snap could have caused oxygen-poor waters to rise from the old rock quarry's bottom to the surface, but they don't understand what sparked the massive die-off.

Jesus Christ said in John 14:1-3: "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."

Our Second Coming quote for today is from Andrew Murray who said, "There is such a danger of our being so occupied with the things that are to come more than with him who is to come."

More than 5,500 people flee after Muslim attacks on Christians in Nigeria. According to The Angola Press, the Red cross has stated that more than 5,500 people fled their homes after attacks this month on mainly Christian villages in central Nigeria. The violence in the villages in Plateau state "caused dozens of casualties and forced more than 5,500 people to flee their homes. Over 25 villages were affected." The humanitarian organisation said it was now providing food and other essential items to more than 2,800 displaced people.

Christian missionaries are trapped in Burmese crossfire. According to Christians in Crisis, Christian Aid Mission is sending emergency aid to help rescue 17 native missionary families on nine mission stations who are suffering hunger and disease after weeks of bloody violence. Fighting between two unreached people groups has slowed along the Burmese border with Bangladesh, allowing some aid to get through to the Christian villagers and missionary families trapped in the crossfire between Buddhists and Muslims. Native missionaries have asked for urgent help; not only for the stranded missionaries, but for the unreached people groups they are serving.

Experts say Syrian regime is on the verge of collapse. According to Fox News, the killing of several key officials -- the defense minister and the president's brother-in-law -- suggests that the regime that has already killed 17,000 could crumble far more quickly than was anticipated even a few weeks ago. Experts say the next 36 hours are critical. Appearing at a Pentagon news conference alongside U.K. Defense Minister Philip Hammond, Panetta said the bombings suggested that the regime was experiencing "fragmentation around the edges" in its 16-month struggle to retain power.

The Bible says in Luke 21:9: "But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by."

In closing, remember the words of the Lord in Matthew 24:42: "Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come." Matthew 24:44 says, "Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh."

If you are not ready, please understand that you are a sinner and that you have broken God's laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." Please understand that because of your sins, you deserve punishment in hell. Romans 6:23 says "the wages of sin is death..." This is both physical death and spiritual death in hell. But here is the good news. John 3:16 reads, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." May I encourage you to accept Jesus Christ as your Saviour today so that you can be ready for Jesus Christ's return.

Description: Iranian authorities are worried about the spread of house churches in their country. According to Assist News, the increasing spread of Christianity in Iran and the resulting growth of house churches among Iranians is greatly concerning Iranian religious experts and clerics. They make frequent statements about the situation. The Iranian Christian news agency, Mohabat News, Ho-ja-tol Sa-ee-di, the Friday prayer Imam for the religious city of Qom, warned against "the enemy's efforts" to establish "house-churches." Mohabat News said he called on cultural authorities, especially those at the Organization of Islamic Propaganda, to be pioneers in promoting Islamic religious teachings.

International Monetary Fund warns America against creating another recession. According to Agence France-Presse, the International Monetary Fund warned that the Obama administration could be slicing the deficit too fast for the weak US economy as it pared its growth forecast. Managing Director Christine Lagarde said, "Downside risks have intensified" and cited external pressures from the eurozone debt crisis and its potential deterioration, and domestic issues linked to the debt ceiling and the fiscal cliff.

Terrorism and persecution of Christians in India increases for another month. According to Right Side News, police arrested two Christians while they were leading a prayer meeting and passing out tracts in the Bhal-wani district. The Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC) reported that about 75 people had gathered for the prayer meeting when police arrived and took the duo into custody without giving any reason. The province is ruled by an ultra-nationalist party that supports the Hindu extremists said to be responsible for frequent anti-Christian violence.
