    "Susan Rethorst: Retro(intro)spective"
    curated by Melinda Ring

For four weeks, we took over Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church, turning it into a laboratory and a living room. Susan was in-residence, having moved her furniture into the church to continue work on "208 East Broadway", a series of dances made in, and of, her living room. Subsequently displaced in its entirety to the performance site. The goal of her residency was to form the same kind of intimacy with the sanctuary that she has with her apartment, both for the development of the two new works she presented at the end of the platform, and for the platform's auxiliary events.

This video is an artifact of the process.

    Babette Mangolte, filmmaker, photographer

    Living Room Conversations
    June 7, 2011

A marathon evening of conversations with a diverse group of artists, choreographers, writers, and thinkers.

5PM - The Need for Meaning
Originally this evening of conversation was meant to replace the usual post-performance discussion, to remedy our frustration with questions that are phrased a variety of ways but basically ask, "what is your work about?" The topic title comes from a segment with philosopher Avital Ronell in Astra Taylor's film Examined Life, where she speaks about our need for meaning and the "wound" of non-meaning.

    Melinda Ring, choreographer
Bruce Andrews, poet, political science professor
    Pat Steir, visual artist
John Jesurun, writer, director and multi-media artist
