In 2010 I edited my family's home movies from the 60's, 70's and 80's and composed music for it. They were shot on Super 8, transferred to VHS in 1988 and from VHS to DVD in 2007. I like all the different textures and imperfections due to the age of the film and the many transfers. I used those to tell part of the story of my family. I was inspired by Stan Brakhage and his idea of film being visual music. I added actual music at the end- using a toy guitar, pots and pans, thumb pianos, recorders, piano, Juno 106 synthesizer and violin. I recorded the music quickly- I was more interested in the immediate inspiration rather than having it be perfectly precise and slick. Like the film, the music has some rough edges.
