“Invictus” is the story of the first black leader of a racially and politically divided country, who uses his strength and convictions to try to heal the land--a county that is “hungry for greatness”. Sound familiar? Only this film, directed by Clint Eastwood, is not about the America of today, but rather South Africa in the mid 90’s. In this moving true story, President Nelson Mandela (played by Morgan Freeman) hopes to unite his country by joining forces with the captain (Matt Damon) of a mostly white rugby team.
Rugby was considered an elitist sport, played mostly by the rich whites. The running joke in the film is that the blacks in South Africa would cheer for whichever team was playing against the white South African Springboks. Mandela hopes to bring together the people of this fractured post apartheid land through the universal language of sport. Knowledge of rugby is not needed-the sport is just a metaphor for an unconquerable fighting spirit, and the synergism gained by working together for a common cause.
Invictus is an inspiring story of how people can set aside their differences and work towards the greater good-a wonderful message just in time for the holidays. A solid story, believable actors and no-nonsense direction help make this a must see film.
