Cities are the common space in which we live, develop, work, have fun and realize our dreams. In other words, cities are the studios of our lives. After choosing our “creative studio” and spending time inside of it, we stay in the place where life inspires, where motivation to reach new highs always exists and where the fruitful context for favourite job is in place.

Richard Florida, the explorer and founder of Creative Cities practice, says that cities with groups of progressive art, the diversity of cultural life and creative (inspirational) atmosphere, differ from other cities in the higher level of innovation and economical growth.

Creativity should be viewed as an ability to create ideas, turn them into objects (discoveries) and as a possibility to benefit from such innovations. Florida views creativity in the light of three factors: talent (representatives of a creative segment + school graduates + scientists), technology (part of GDP that goes to scientific programmes + number of patents issued per 1 billion population), tolerance (level of resistance to new ideas + boundaries of self-expression).


In the list of the most creative societies (TOP 45) Switzerland is on top with Japan and Finland on 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Ukraine landed on 27th place (19th place for talent, 27th for technology, 33rd place for tolerance and boundaries of self-expression are on penultimate 44th position).

Ukrainian creative group Garage Gang promotes the idea of creative cities and initiates a number of art and social initiatives to remake social processes presenting a series of video cases about creative cities and societies of other countries.

In this video we are telling you about the beautiful project called Berlin Project Volunteering, 16 participants of which are generally speaking students, civilized hippies from Canada, Spain, England, New Zealand, Italy and other countries together with common artistically inclined inhabitants of the German capital rented a 5-room apartment in the heart of the city and decided to start a new way of society existence in the physical environment. And they did it! They welcome everyone who comes to Berlin to live with them. They use the possibilities of world-wide Couch Surfing community to realize their passion for adventures and get to know other cultures by inviting couch-surfers to live with them. What they demand/offer in turn: volunteering in housekeeping, cooking, participation in cultural projects (Saturday street dinner, weekend wine selling in a Berlin parks), participation in various initiatives, demonstrations, home meetings, club visits, beer drinking and other good things.
