1. Since the birth of Christ's Church, from the dark passages of the catacombs to the private chambers of homes along the streets of Roman cities across the Empire, to this gathering this morning—every believer of all the ages have shared something.

There is a tie that binds every believer to Christ and to each other. Tonight, we share that amazing connection—we have a common confession with every individual believing servant of God alive today either on earth or in Heaven.

By that one very powerful link with all the churches around the world that are faithfully following Christ's Word—we are celebrating a Communion of confessing Christ.

When we look back across the ages, there is one worship service shared in common with all believers in every part of the world, throughout all the history of Christ's church, and that is the Lord’s Table. We:

    Proclaim Christ
    At Communion

As we open to I Corinthians 11:23-26 please notice what our Lord Jesus instructed Paul to point each believer to do at Communion—the link that ties us all: past, present, and future. Please stand as we listen to the voice of God:

1 Corinthians 11:23-26 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes. NKJV

  2. Endless thanksgiving, around the Throne, with all the redeemed of all the ages: that is what salvation prompts in the hearts of believers.

    Endless Thanksgiving
    For Our Salvation

Each time we gather to celebrate communion, we are part of what we could call a simulcast, that is going on both globally and celestially. We are all focused on the same One who as the Lamb of God died for our sins on the Cross.

Globally, we are part of every confessing believer, in every genuine church that honors Christ as the Divine, Virgin-born, Son of God whose Vicarious, Substitutionary, sacrificial death completely paid the price for our sins.

When Jesus instituted the celebration of the Lord’s Supper for His Church, He began a tie that would bind all believers, through all the ages together. When we proclaim Christ’s death on our behalf, and in our place, we are confessing that we are a part of those who will someday surround the Throne.

There is only one song that we are told is being sung in Heaven—it is the song of every believer, of all the ages, gathered to worship the Lamb. That song in mentioned in Revelation three times (5:9; 14:3; 15:3), and always is tied to the Lamb and also to His redemption. That is the wonder.

When we get to Heaven we have something shared with everyone else who is there: Christ was slain to redeem us. That is the new song of Heaven. Look for a moment at the scene of worship in Heaven.

    All Worship
    Meets at the Cross

Before the Cross all sacrifices offered in faith looked forward to the sacrifice of Christ.

For some Christ was portrayed in the substitute sacrificed at the Tabernacle, or at the Temple..

For some Christ was portrayed in the substitute sacrificed on an altar before there was any Tabernacle.

For some it was believing that only God could forgive and save them.

Since the Cross, we look back at the price He paid in His own Body on the Tree.

But whether before or after, for all who meet in Heaven: it is about the Cross

That is also the tie that binds every one of us believers at the Table to Christ and to each other. We share that amazing connection—we have a common confession with every individual believing servant of God alive today: either on earth or in Heaven.

  4. Colossians 2:11-15 (NKJV)11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

As you saw each of those who were baptized coming up out of the water, they portray going into the water old, dead, and lost; and coming up new, fresh, and alive.

So baptism portrays salvation; and salvation gives us:

    NEWNESS OF LIFE INTO WHICH
    WE ENTER AND LIVE

Baptism is the reminder we are in a whole new life now that we are saved.
We used to be in a membership with some powerful bullies that were always threatening and holding us hostage.

No more. Christ defeated them and all we have to do is remind ourselves and them of this fact. We are sons of the owner, they have no power over us unless we give it to them!

We who have been baptized declare that through Christ, God has given us:

LIFE TRANSFORMING TRUTH # 1: SALVATION
MEANS A HEART THAT IS NEW

Colossians 2:11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, NKJV

BAPTISM DECLARES WE HAVE A HEART THAT IS NEW: this speaks of spiritual heart circumcision (Ezekiel 36:26-27), or the work of salvation as Christ is putting off our old person

LIFE TRANSFORMING TRUTH # 2: SALVATION MEANS
A PAST THAT IS BURIED AND FOREVER GONE

Colossians 2:12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. NKJV

BAPTISM DECLARES WE HAVE A PAST THAT IS BURIED: of our burial with Christ

LIFE TRANSFORMING TRUTH # 3: SALVATION
    MEANS A FRESH, NEW BEGINNING

Colossians 2:13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, NKJV

BAPTISM DECLARES: of our new life in Christ

LIFE TRANSFORMING TRUTH # 4:SALVATION MEANS
AN END TO ALL GUILT, ALL MY SINS ARE ON JESUS

Colossians 2:14a having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. NKJV

BAPTISM DECLARES: the end of any condemnation against us.

LIFE TRANSFORMING TRUTH # 5: SALVATION
MEANS I HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR

Colossians 2:14b having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. NKJV

BAPTISM DECLARES: I have nothing left to fear.

LIFE TRANSFORMING TRUTH # 6: SALVATION MEANS
I AM FREED FROM LEGALISM & EXTERNALISM
Colossians 2:15-23 (NKJV)Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. 18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.20 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations—21 “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” 22 which all concern things which perish with the using—according to the commandments and doctrines of men? 23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.

BAPTISM DECLARES: I am freed, and don’t have to conform to anyone’s rules but God’s.

LIFE TRANSFORMING TRUTH # 7: SALVATION MEANS
I CAN SAY NO TO SIN & MEAN IT!

BAPTISM DECLARES: I am freed, and don’t have to surrender to my old habits, fears, and sins that enslaved me for so long.
