Hiraizumi is a naturally beautiful place, but much of its beauty, including its magnificent gardens and temples, was shaped by human hands. Hundreds of years ago, people tapped treasured lacquer trees here, getting the raw material they needed to produce Japan's finest natural lacquer. They used it to adorn the city’s temples.
