Moneymaker is an endurance performance piece which draws on the history of Saartjie Baartman, James Brown and video vixens. This iteration was performed at the Corcoran Gallery of Art at the invitation of noted collector Mera Rubell for the closing weekend of the 30 Americans exhibition. African Futures: DC is an original performance piece commissioned by the Smithsonian Museum of African Art in response to the exhibition, Yinka Shonibare MBE. Holly Bass wrote, choreographed and directed this dance-theater work, which features Ayesha Ngaujah and Kendra Ross. The program, which took place on February 6, 2010, also included a work created by dancers from the Washington Ballet.
Pay Purview references video on demand, pay-per-view, and the performance of booty from Venus Hottentots to hip hop video vixens. The audience must pay cash for each peepshow-style vignette to begin. The curtain opens and the performer dances to a selection of songs ranging from Rodgers & Hart’s “Ten Cents a Dance” to Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” as well as excerpts of a radio program on Sarah Baartman.
