1. IDA is a film about two women who can either be trapped by their past or break free from it. It is about identity, loss and survival.
Poland 1962. ANNA is a young novice on the cusp of taking her vows to become a nun in a Catholic order. She learns from her Mother Superior that she has a living relative who she must visit before she does. Aunt WANDA is a former hard-line Communist state prosecutor and a Jew and so is ANNA whose real name is IDA.
The two women embark on a voyage of discovery of each other and their past. IDA has to choose between her birth identity and the religion that saved her from being massacred during the Nazi occupation of Poland. WANDA has to confront a decision she made during the War when she chose loyalty to the cause before family. WANDA wants to guide IDA not to repeat her own mistake of putting faith before life and family.

There is nothing like the shared experience of laughing and crying together in a full cinema. The best place for discussion and debate is a cinema foyer.
We will build on the proud 22 year tradition of the Jewish Film Festival in Australia established by the JFFA with a fresh and diverse program of films that celebrate and explore the Jewish experience around the globe. Equal weight has been given to films from Israel and those from the Jewish diaspora with 24 Australian premieres from 14 countries.
Critically acclaimed major award winners that challenge will screen alongside crowd pleasing box office hits.
The Jewish knack of tickling the funny bone will feature. Another great achievement of the Jewish people is the tradition of openly debating the difficult questions. JIFF will reflect this quality and hopefully illuminate something of the universal human experience.
Thank you to our filmmakers, advertisers and of course to you, our customers. Enjoy the surprise and discovery in our extensive program.
We are proud to present this great collection of films in the magical environment of the cinema and look forward to arguing with you in the foyer.
