The Uncanny Valley is a hypothesis which originates from robotics that was first articulated by Masahiro Mori in 1970:

When I came across Mori’s findings and especially as I continued to read further upon the Uncanny Valley the idea to use the concept as the basis for a process based creative work in which I would observe and write about the psychic changes which were wrought within me by changing Alpha's appearance took hold and I worked on the idea for one month in SL, June 2008.
