1. EarthKeepers II is an Interfaith Energy Conservation and Community Garden Initiative to Restore Native Plants and Protect the Great Lakes from Toxins like Airborne Mercury - across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and northeast Wisconsin - in cooperation with the EPA Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, U.S. Forest Service, 10 faith traditions and Native American tribes like the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community.

EarthKeepers II and the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative are battling non-native invasive species that ruin ecosystems and hurt pollinators like bees and butterflies.

The EarthKeepers II Technical Advisor for Community Gardens is Jan Schultz, head botanist at the USFS Eastern Region (R-9) Office in Milwaukee, WI.

Schultz is sharing her expertise about pollinators, native plants, invasive species, cultivars and other issues related to a healthy ecosystem.

Americans need to rethink their war on dandelions and other native plants - like wildflowers - as they search for the so-called "perfect lawn" - that is not pollinator friendly, Schultz says.

EarthKeepers II is educating the public about the detrimental effects of non-native plants and reducing airborne mercury through energy conservation audits at 40 churches/temples – and teaching congregations how they can save energy in their homes.

EarthKeepers II is helping plant 30 interfaith community gardens across northern Michigan and NE Wisconsin

The Solution Instead of Spreading Invasives: EarthKeepers II and the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

The native plant gardens being created at churches/temples in northern Michigan and NE Wisconsin can help spread pollinators instead of invasive species.

Organizers hope others will be inspired by the project – making its reach even further.

  2. Thanks to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, EarthKeepers II is helping reduce airborne mercury – by assisting northern Michigan religious communities as they reduce energy consumption in their homes and Houses of Worship.

EarthKeepers II (EK II) is an interfaith community garden and energy conservation initiative across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Northeast Wisconsin.

The two-year project is funded by the EPA Great Lakes Restoration Initiative in cooperation with Anishinaabe Native American tribes and 10 faiths representing 250 churches and temples.

EK II supports the planting of 30 interfaith community gardens that include vegetables – and pollinator-friendly native plants.

Reducing airborne mercury is the goal of energy conservation audits at 40 houses of worship – completed by the fall of 2013.

The in-depth reports will help churches and temples plan ways to reduce energy consumption.

EK II helps fund faith community energy conservation measures suggested by the inspections.

To further reduce airborne mercury - EK II educates congregations about ways to make their homes more energy efficient.

Founded by the nonprofit Cedar Tree Institute in Marquette, the EK II team includes the EPA, the U.S. Forest Service and Delta Green, a Marquette based nonprofit corporation.

10 faith traditions sponsor EK II: Roman Catholic, Episcopal, Jewish, Lutheran, Presbyterian, United Methodist, Bahá'í, Unitarian Universalist and Zen Buddhist.

Among the urgent lifesaving issues addressed by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and its strategic partners:
    Cleaning up toxics
    Combating invasive species
    Protecting watersheds from polluted run-off
Restoring wetlands and other wildlife habitat

That's why EK II cares about the Great Lakes – and why you should too.

  4. InterChange Media in collaboration with the Beacon Food Forest created this video that will be shown at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20 June 20-22.

The Beacon Hill neighborhood in Seattle, Washington is building an urban food forest on 7 acres of public land. Located in one of the most diverse zip codes in the United States, their neighborhood community has come together to grow their own food to rehabilitate the local ecosystem, improve public health and educate about the climate impact of food production. The project will break ground in July 2012.

Music composed by Erica Hilario. Special thanks to Glenn Herlihy one of the co-founders who spent a lot of time helping us create the video. Thanks also to Jacqueline Cramer, Giovanni Dellino, Barbara Jefferson, Margaret Harrison and to everyone involved with the project.
