Coco is a short, poetic documentary capturing the essence of the Burlesque lifestyle and inviting the audience to glance inside an underground world of entertainment. Illustrated by a strong, rich visual composed with a profound, alternative narrative, ambient audio and reminiscent music, the approach to our filmmaking is artistic and conceptual.
The documentary aims to create an impact, resonating with the concept of female empowerment and perception, whilst capturing the thrilling atmosphere of Burlesque.
Focusing on the beauty of the female form and the movement created by Coco Deville, by her dance and by her affect on her audience, the visual echoes this notion throughout. Furthermore, this effect is reversed when we reach a personal, contemplative tone as Coco is visualized in juxtaposition on the beach, the waves and the world moving around her. In a poetic manner, expressing the fragmented nature of dreams, thoughts and emotions, the narrative, sound and visual work together to create a dreamlike, hazy journey from Coco to Vanessa.
Within the exploration of the conflict between the sexy, provocative Coco Deville and her real identity off stage, lies the depth and contrast of the documentary. Vanessa’s view of life and reality, with her profession emerged in a conflicting world, is narrated by herself, intimately and honestly, revealing human qualities of insecurity and imperfection.
Essentially, we are delicately and intricately taking documentary and making it into an art form, reflecting the artistic and stimulating nature of Burlesque.
A short film of Coco Deville's clown routine. Shot at Cabaret! Cabaret! A resident night of Proud Brighton.
Coco has been a burlesque performer for many years now and is considered by many to be a queen of the art form.
It has been a pleasure working with her.
