PHILIP SIMMONS (1912-2009) was born on Daniel Island, SC and has become one of the nation's most celebrated Master Blacksmiths.

From 2005-2009, Sunhead Projects followed Mr. Simmons with portable video and audio equipment.

THE DOCUMENTATION PROJECT:
AN UPDATE
• The Documentation Project is in immediate need for technological additions and upgrades. Sunhead Projects has accumulated 70+ hours of video footage, thousands of photographs, sketches and other Simmons memorabilia, which need to be transcribed, scanned and archived. Most importantly, a back-up system is needed.

OVERVIEW OF PROJECT:
Rarely does a single artist impact the appearance of a city. Yet with hundreds of gates, fences, balconies, steprails, and window grills, Charleston has been decorated by the hands of Philip Simmons.

In 2005, when the Philip Simmons Foundation and Sunhead Projects partnered to create a multi-media, comprehensive archive of Mr. Simmons’ work, it was immediately discovered that there was a treasure trove of over 800 pieces that desperately needed to be electronically cataloged and archived.

No project has utilized multi-media and interactive technology to comprehensively capture, archive and preserve the works of Philip Simmons.

In addition to the Database, DVD, Book & Lesson Plans, the Philip Simmons Documentation Project encompasses on-the-ground, down-loadable self-guided tours with printable maps and video kiosks.
