Beyond the Surface International is an online platform, common meeting place, and networking tool for youth-focused surfing and ocean-adventure clubs, programs, and organizations. As a California-based 501(c)3 tax-exempt public charity, Beyond the Surface International partners with local nonprofit organizations in coastal communities worldwide that use surfing, other water sports, and ocean adventure as tools for education, conflict resolution, health, and community development to raise funds and awareness. Furthermore, we collaborate directly together with program directors, community leaders, and local youths to develop and then implement specific projects and initiatives that further each local NGO's mission and the community's vision. We believe that the innate ability for humans to create playful fun can be utilized as a highly effective method in addressing social issues and facilitating progressive change. Beyond the Surface International also directs the financial funding, material donations, and overall marketing campaigns for specific community-based projects. Beyond the Surface International advocates for local people and entire coastal communities across the world to benefit from surfers traveling to the remotest of places in search of waves through sustainable tourism principles, methods, and practices.

    Shibanraj

    Age: 18

    Hometown: Kodi Bengre, Karnataka, India

Shibanraj is from Kodi Bengre, a small coastal village just outside the university town of Manipal in Karnataka in Southern India. Shibanraj is interning with the Shaka Surf Club and is Captain of the Shaka Kids Surf Club. Shibanraj is in his final year of high school.

Shibanraj comes from a fishing family who live right next door to the surf club's shack. Shibanraj started surfing two years ago. As an intern, he is responsible for helping with repairs on the Shaka Shack and assisting in surf lessons. Shibanraj comes from a fishing family living below the poverty line. Shibanraj’s father was a fishermen but is unable to provide for his family now as he is 80% blind. Therefore, Shibanraj takes up many of the family’s responsibilities. Shibanraj’s mother is a nurse at a hospital and cooks up delicious local cuisine for the Shaka Surf Club students bringing in additional income for the family.

Shibanraj is very shy but opens up on a skateboard and loves sharing his music. He is the oldest crew member in the surf club and seen by other groms as a big brother. Shibanraj comes from a lower cast family inside the fishing community and before surfing Shibanraj saw his life living by the sea as an unfortunate fate. Shibanraj yearned to be in the city because that meant “development” for him. However, since he's started surfing, Shibanraj has a new appreciation for living so close to the ocean and his surroundings. Shibanraj cares for the development of his home community and inspiring the other kids in his village to embrace their own voices versus moving with the masses.
