ROBIN HOOD, ROBIN HOOD, RIDING END TO END:
Inspired by dickheads impersonating other dickheads, this is about the future of so called social media. My name is Robin Hood and I am funky. I’m a big fan of blogs, open networks and anything remotely user generated or real. So King Richard has drawn up his charter for the future and he and millions of his followers hope it becomes less anonymous and that people who call themselves James, really are ^_^
Some people who pose or post as others, positively encourage bitchiness, worse still, celebrate cowardice. Maid Marian, Santa Claus and all the real cats I hang out with, agree.
The veil of anonymity has been used by The Sheriff of Chipped Shoulders to vent his spleen on Halloween. Idiots like him, no matter what age group or how cool their self belief, are medieval in terms of the axe they have to grind. The cool can be oh so old fashioned.
I think what makes us interactive filmmakers so much more legitimately cathartic, is we create messaging with pictures or collaborate with other visual artists to make a point. It takes a bit of work. If only it were as easy as just word processing an opinion or pressing a button.
A lot of The Sheriffs and many of The Young Dashing Knights are far more likely to grow into hackers or targeted and professional saboteurs, or even just recruitment specialists. A lot of these types of “social” people cannot out-think or out-write their creative competitors.
All they’ve ever learnt or been taught is how to “seed a notion” and leave the rest to the online Sherwood Forest. Believe me, these guys are the real Scrooge and the ones good old Father Christmas isn’t delivering to. The sad truth is that this kind of deceitfulness exists in so many areas that change people’s lives and livelihoods.
But, Robin Hood is not some holier-than-thou mushy-boy and likes a good stoush, provided it can be with a sense of humour. But, if little jokes from little people turn into a very expensive hoot, that’s when I put my armour on, baby! What a lot of these “social” people do is marginalize. They cannot debate with constructiveness, wit or objectivity. I just love videos about cats. But I cannot stand catty. It’s soooo boring.
At digital conferences today, people eye each other up for totally different reasons to the same thing happening at a good dance party. Is the girl smiling at you over her cocktail the person that called your website unmitigated shit on her anonymous blog that morning? The issue here is that her “I’m a Catty-Dog Site” is what she is known for, not that beautiful girl standing in the corner. It’s never that one opinion is more worthy than another, but simply that significance of each perspective changes with its author.
Millions of “open minds” and “artists” building the future believe calculations are already being made as to how much content is inarticulate table tennis. If you look at those that have already been removed from many networks, it is because their content was misinformed or puerile. They then try and rebuild their own networks, but often fail. But, I guess none of us want too much moderation or control in these areas in the future. However, the continuing trend of lack of anonymity and genuine community is a very good one.
Happy Christmas from Robin Hood and all Merry Men and Women.
vimeo.com/7262480 My second collaboration with the ever lovely Sonia Mansour where she recreates a two dimensional Richard Ashcroft rewalking that famous outer-London-path of The Bitter Sweet Symphony......Alright, (in a London accent)...
It had to happen: WIDE OPEN SPACE IV. Watch this space because it’s….You know the drill ^_^ (Father Christmas might ‘get in’ first).
And just because I want to say her name, I will. Jessica Mauboy.
