Every 16 seconds, someone in Sub-Saharan Africa will die from HIV/ AIDS. Justin and Nick, friends from a Cru Bible study at Vanderbilt, heard God calling His church to make a difference. After a trip to Kenya, Justin returned to start CARE for AIDS, a ministry that “seeks to mimic the holistic ministry of Christ in order to transform a community and empower the local church to offer help and support to people who have HIV/AIDS.” As the friends graduated, Justin recruited Nick to move to Kenya to lay the foundation for the ministry’s work in partnership with local churches while Justin remained stateside to build the organization’s support base. The strategic leadership skills learned in Cru helped them train Kenyan leaders who have ministered to thousands through providing health, economic, and spiritual counsel. Since its inception, close to 1000 Kenyans have trusted Christ through this ministry.

John was a student in Cru at Vanderbilt. After he graduated, the Lord led him to serve people on the margins of society. While he thought he would be doing so internationally, the Lord clearly called him to Austin, TX to be the director of outreach for Trade in Hope, a documentary film and movement fighting sex trafficking in the U.S. But he didn’t stop with just telling people about the issue. He gave them tangible ways to get involved in Austin through Allies Against Slavery. This collaborative group works together in the city and has opened the eyes of thousands to this atrocity, which is the first step. In this work, he has had the opportunity to share with many why he has hope in the midst of such oppression - Jesus.

After getting accepted to join Cru staff, God had other plans for Jenade. He placed her in the athletic department of Central Michigan University as an athletic trainer where He is using her immensely. After coming to Christ through the Destino movement at UT El Paso, she grew in her faith and learned to share with others. Now, as a trainer, she interacts daily with athletes and often has spiritual conversations with them. She leads a Bible study with the athletes and even led a couple women to the Lord last year. After graduating from Michigan State and San Diego State, Joseph and Tara went to New Staff training to join the Inner-City ministry of Cru. While there, they felt God calling them clearly to minister differently - through the marketplace. They followed the Lord to Philadelphia where they began working and reaching out to co-workers. Their love for people in the inner-city remained, so they moved downtown and quickly began blessing their neighbors, loving the homeless, serving refugees, and leading a prison ministry. With a strong community of faith around them, they have had a wonderful impact for Christ in the City of Brotherly Love.

While interning with Cru at Miami of Ohio, Kelly often shared with students how they could serve the Lord in various vocations, including teaching. She loved campus ministry and never expected that God would call her to leave Ohio to teach in the inner city of New York but that’s just what He did. In her classroom she has the opportunity to present curriculum filled with awe and wonder of the God who made the universe. She also gets the chance to love kids well who have no positive role models in their lives. In addition to this, she and her roommate open up their home every week to young adults for dinner as an opportunity to get to know them and share Jesus’ love with them.
