Malabar has always been thought of as a “rough” estate but to me it’s always been home. I have so many memories of growing up there and so many stories. After spending a week collecting interviews with residents I realised that it’s a place steeped in memories. Everyone I spoke to had a story to tell whether it was why the round about on Cornish Crescent was taken away or how the kids used to slide down “fern field” on bits of guttering. Walking around in the blazing sunshine it dawned on me just how beautiful the landscape surrounding the estate is and how lucky I was to grow up there. I was very careful when filming not to capture any people in the shots (though I’m sure a couple snuck in!), I want audiences to concentrate on the voices echoing around the streets, hear the stories of people and places and enjoy the shared memories of Malabar.
