Nancy Hirshberg, Stonyfield's VP of Natural Resources, explains that most containers made from conventional plastics are not recycled back into their original forms: The functionality of the plastic degrades with each reprocessing. Feedstock recovery of PLA enables it to be fully recycled, not downcycled. Eventually, Stonyfield will recover lactic acid from used cups rather than make PLA from virgin corn.
