i started filming this short series 5 years ago. i know it's pretty hardcore but i wanted to draw attention to the huge drug and crime problems with south africa's poverty stricken youths. i shot most of it on a 7d before i even knew how to use the camera so please excuse the shaky wobbly vibes.
alone but together the people of fietas struggle through poverty and more than often turn to drugs and theft sadly ending in jail. in jail they are exposed to extreme bouts of violence, gangs, rape and even harder drugs.
these kids leave school early then have children of their own really young, unable to support them
and properly school them a viscous domino effect perpetuates.
shaun went to jail. two months after i shot him in the back of a police car i bumped into him at the local liquor store where i was shooting an interview. he was sadly high and asked for money. The screwdriver kid from part 1 got a job working with his dad as a mechanic and occasionally goes back to fietas to visit old friends or at least that's what people told me. martin has two children now and holds down a job even though he continues to battle with his addiction. the drug problem in fietas is out of control and even thou i have made a lot of friends there, i have lost even more to drugs, jail and the STREETS OF FIETAS.
