    Abstract
    We are faced with concerns of climate change, increased global demand on nonrenewable energy resources, national energy insecurity, growing food insecurity, and continuous exploitation of limited natural resources. Sustainability requires research and technology development that addresses above stated issues. This presentation is about a new paradigm: examining an integrated approach in converting renewable bioresources into bioenergy/biobased products with concomitant protection of our fragile environment. The speaker will share some of his on-going research activities in the field of bioenergy/biobased products and environmental biotechnology.

    About the Speaker: Dr. Samir Kumar Khanal is an Associate Professor of Biological Engineering in the Department of Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering at University of Hawai'i at Mānoa and Collaborating Professor at Iowa State University. Dr. Khanal obtained Ph.D. in Civil Engineering with focus in Environmental Biotechnology from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong in 2002. Dr. Khanal’s research focuses on bioenergy/biobased products and environmental biotechnology. Dr. Khanal has over 60 refereed journal publications since 2003. He is a co-recipient of R&D 100 Award in 2008. Dr. Khanal also published a book "Anaerobic Biotechnology for Bioenergy Production: Principles and Application" (Wiley-Blackwell) and is a lead editor of another bioenergy book entitled "Bioenergy and Biofuel from Biowastes and Biomass" (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Dr. Khanal is a registered professional engineer in the state of Iowa.

    Abstract: Learn what the electric cooperative is doing on Kauai to increase renewable generation while increasing reliability utilizing smart grid and battery energy storage technologies. Understand the challenges involved in operating an island grid as more distributed generation connects to the system. How much is too much and is there a system limit.

    About the Speaker: Michael Yamane is Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) Chief of Operations. Yamane is responsible for the areas of Transmission and Distribution (T&D), Production, Engineering, Legislative and Regulatory Affairs and Safety. Michael holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa specializing in Computer Hardware and Software, Power and Control, and Communications. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Hawai’i and is also a licensed commercial pilot with a multiengine/instrument rating.

    At Starwood, doing the right thing for the environment and our communities is more important than ever. Our customers and owners are asking for it, our guests expect it, and our associates are passionate about it. Global Citizenship is a key driver to our success at Starwood. Therefore, we’ve created a Starwood corporate initiative called “30/20 by20” which means to reduce energy by 30% and water by 20% by 2020, for all of our Starwood properties worldwide. The Hawaii region is on track to meeting this important, yet very lofty initiative, as we’ve implemented a variety of projects from basic operational behavior changes, to HVAC condenser water pool heating. Furthermore, we have a great outlook of future energy efficiency projects, which include, cogeneration, rainwater harvesting, photo voltaic, etc that will take us well pass our 30/20 by 20 goals.

    About the Speaker:
    As the Area Director of Engineering & Sustainability at Starwood Hotels & Resorts Hawaii, Eric Au provides the direction and leadership in the field of engineering and construction at Starwood’s 11 properties throughout the state. Throughout his tenure at Starwood, Eric has guided his teams toward building consistency through the Sheraton, Westin, Luxury Collection and St. Regis brands, and is very passionate about bringing a higher level of sustainability the hotel properties through the “30-20-20” Starwood corporate initiative (reduce energy by 30% and water by 20% by 2020) throughout the region. In all, Eric has worked for 24 years in the field with 12 years of experience in the petrochemical and energy industry designing and implementing process control systems, managing large capital projects, and driving productivity and efficiencies within operations. Locally born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Eric received his Bachelors of Arts degree in Physics from Linfield College and his Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Oregon State University.

    Rob Kinslow is an organic farmer, aerospace engineer, inspirational filmmaker, wellness coach, and social entrepreneur. As a leadership sustainability advisor and director of the Sustainability Association of Hawaii he has advocated moving the state of Hawai'i towards a sustainability index, for energy efficiency/conservation education and is developing the business case for sustainability leadership. He graduated with honors from the acclaimed Global Leadership and Sustainable Development program at HPU. He has a high, wide and deep
