    9:00AM – 1:00PM

Visit at the pilot vineyard of the Sicilian Agriculture Department in Biesina, near Marsala.

Ten hectares of hundreds of different varieties of Sicilian grapes.

We'll have grapes and wine tasting of Catarratto, Frappato, Grecanico, Grillo, Inzolia, Nero d’Avola and Nerello Mascalese. Among the autochthonous grapes we'll taste Albanello, Alicante, Carricante, Corinto Nero, Damaschino, Perricone, Malvasia di Lipari, Minnella Bianca, Moscato Bianco, Nerello Cappuccio, Nocera and Zibibbo. Among the ancient grapes, or “reliquia” ("relic"), there are about 50 varieties like Inzolia Nera, Maiulina, Dunnuni, Recunu, Racina di vento, etc.

During the morning, we'll have a "schiticchiata", the traditional meals of the vineyards workers.

    VISIT TO ANCIENT MARSALA SALTERNS
    4:00PM – 6:30PM

Visit at the salterns Ettore e Infersa near the ancient Phoenician colony of Mozia, we will experience the salt harvesting and visiting the salt museum.

The ancient Phoenician colony therefore, was founded in the 8th C. B.C. on one of the four islands of the Stagnone Lagoon, now known as the Island of San Pantaleo.

Motya, the Phoenician name by which it came to be known before, is alleged to translate loosely as “spinning centre” after wool carding and spinning cottage-industries were instituted on the island. Like most other Phoenician colonies, the island became a commercial trade-centre-cum-staging post for Phoenician ships plying the Mediterranean. The 8th C. B.C. also saw the beginning of the Greek colonisation of Sicily which, for the main, was concentrated on the east side of the island. It therefore seemed appropriate for the Phoenicians to consolidate their activities in the west enabling Motya to grow in importance and to evolve into a small town. In the 6C BC, the struggle for Greek or Carthaginian supremacy over Sicily gained momentum, and Motya was forced into taking sides. Hefty defensive walls were erected around the settlement to provide better protection.

In 397 B.C., the tyrant of Syracuse Dionysius the Elder, laid siege to the town until at last it capitulated, snuffing out every last will to continue. Its surviving inhabitants sought refuge on the mainland, and soon integrated themselves among the people of Lilybaeum, modern-day Marsala.

During the night we'll visit the cellar with the "nursery" where Giacomo Ansaldi collects old Perpetuum wines: here, some tasting from old casks will introduce us to the world of Marsala wines that existed before fortified wines introduced there by British merchants.
