  4. Hello Missional Worship Class!

I hope your Spring Break was restful and fun. Welcome back and let’s get to it.

We’re continuing to explore hip-hop and worship. Reading some of your posts, it’s clear to us, your instructors, that the musical style can be challenging. We agree. Still, we want to encourage you to listen and to dig beneath the surface a little with us.

We’ve posted some music this week. You’ll find two versions of DMX’s “Prayer” as well as a link to all of the Talib Kweli album. All of these are from YouTube.

Next week’s video with Dr. Ralph Watkins will help us all to understand what is happening more deeply, but what we’d like you to consider is what kind of liturgical theology is at work here. We’re not asking you to like the music, but to find ways to understand the theology at work, it’s social location, and it’s relationship to the Christian practice of worship.

This is a kind of worship from the margins, a re-mixing of what we know and understand into new forms, that leads us to disruption (which we discuss later in the term).

So, this week, as you read, look for the theology at work in the musical choices being made.

Again, welcome back from spring break. We’re enjoying your work and online interaction. Keep doing the good work you are doing.

  5. Our first video is a look back, if you will, at Zink and Cavanaugh. You all did some great work with Cavanaugh. It’s not the easiest read, but from the posts on Moodle, it’s clear that you all got the basic gist. I’ll unpack his thinking a little more for us in this first part.
