Ultimate Frisbee - College Division

The South Eugene High School Axemen Ultimate team journey to Blaine, MN on May 16th and 17th this spring for the UPA Western Championship. This was the 5th year that the championship has been held and every year South has come looking for a championship title. In 2005, they were knocked out in the semis against The Northwest School and took home a tie for 3rd. In 2006 South faced the The Northwest School again, but this time were knocked out in the quarters giving them a 5th place finish. In 2007, South made it all the way to the finals but came up short against The Northwest School. And in 2008, South had their worst finish, coming in 8th place after losing to Monroe HS in a quarterfinal matchup very few people wish to remember.

But, this was 2009, and South was strongly considered a favorite with highly talented players with large chips on their shoulders.

This first part chronicles Saturday pool play, pre-quarters, and quarter finals. And the second part finishes the story.

Oregon has had a women’s team since the mid 80s and had streaks of success over the past 2.5 decades. The team’s last College Nationals were in 2002. Oregon has a history of Callahan winners with Jody Dozono in 1999 and Chelsea Dengler in 2003. A few years ago the team decided to be renamed “Fugue” which has two appropriate definitions.

Fugue /fyüg/ noun 1 a dream-like state of loss of one’s identity that is usually coupled with flight from one’s usual environment. 2 a musical term to describe a short melody introduced by one part and successively taken up by others.

The team name “Fugue” adequately represents a change from regional level competition to high levels of national caliber ultimate representing the Northwest. The team has battled back onto the national circuit after four years, and Fugue is making its long awaited return to the UPA College Nationals.

[12-10] over Minnesota

Traveling 14 hours to Baton Rouge Louisiana, North Park Lost Boys took 11th place out of 60 teams at the 22nd Mardi Gras tournament.

Lost Boys traveled 15 hours to Tallahassee Florida to tie for 5th place in the Tally Classic.

With a tournament of 20 teams, North Park Lost Boys traveled 12 hours to Talladega, AL to play in Mud Bowl '09. Going undefeated all day saturday and entering sunday with a 4-0 record, North Park fought hard against Kennsaw State for another win. The next game was against Georgia's X team, and was a close loss at 9-11. North Park took the tournament with a 5th place spot after defeating Emory.
