Fat Butcher Photosonica

Last Saturday Fat Butcher returned to Brixton laden down with new clips and an improved rig for a night of funk, northern soul, ska and jazz-heavy sounds at Dex.

This time I've kept the original audio as the band and DJs were (again) outstanding. We were treated to a 2 hour set from the Soothsayers, who kept a brisk pace and caved in to rowdy demands for two encores.

My visuals didn't come out very clearly on this video so I've overlaid some samples to give you an idea of how things looked without nightvision...

Jewelspit's first party at Dex, Brixton, featuring live performances from ska/blues 20-piece the Top Cats and visuals by Fat Butcher. The orange light mural you can see on either side of the screen is a Jewelspit original.

Restless ft. Testament by Diesler, featuring artwork from their album The Rhythm Station animated by Fat Butcher.

I loved this track - available from Diesler's myspace - instantly, the cheeky piano and verbally dextrous MCing and the general bouncy tone backed up by a playful musicality. I designed the visuals to complement these qualities of the music without distracting from the live performances. Something more intense and detailed, or abstract and evocative, wouldn't have worked. This is cheery, illustrative retro and set in a familiar pictorial space. Props to the illustrator!
