Ahoy! We are the City Shanty Band an 11-member shanty band described by the Daily Mail as a “hackney-based a cappella group” which is wrong because we’ve got an accordion and a drum – silly fascists. We sing a mix of original compositions and traditional sea shanties with an urban twist. Jesus! Urban twist is a horrible way of describing anything. Basically, we change the lyrics a bit to make them relevant and shit, yeah?

Luke Ritchie’s debut, The Water’s Edge, is a culmination of a two year song-writing journey.
Starting in January 2010, Ritchie started recording a song a week. He released each one as a podcast - for six months. Creating 26 in total, his songs spread through word of mouth, resulting in 8,500 downloads by the time he stopped. (The whole diary is here: www.lukeritchie.co.uk/podcasts).
The podcasts reached composer Nico Muhly, with a track record of collaborative work with acts such as Björk, Jónsi & Anthony & the Johnsons. Muhly composed pieces for five songs on the album, including opener Lighthouse, and played the piano and harmonium himself. The arrangements have taken 'The Water's Edge' to another level, effortlessly building on Ritchie's original works to create wonderfully rich melodies.
Special thanks to:
Charlotte Ritchie, Melanie Naklha and Daisy Chute for their support and their lovely voices.

Expect the unexpected. What at first may walk in line may soon meander down routes that lead you to places of joy and exuberance. Expansive lyrics cover the mutilated mundane to the gleefully abstract, on a backdrop of gritty guitars, soulful sax and jazz-beat percussion, The Joker & The Thief like to walk their own way.
Dan, Justin and Josh have stunned audiences with their musical bravado and performance. The lyrics get under your skin, rewriting the love songs of the past with a modern and individual twist and the music grabs you by the collar with its incessant passion dripping out of every note.
