The book is about a drastic change in the life of Aukje. She quits her office job after a long relationship fails, and started a new adventure. Together with her New Zealand partner Jon, she then cycles from Tanzania, straight through Africa and the Middle East, to the Netherlands, her home. Aukje van Gerven besluit haar leven drastisch om te gooien. Ze hangt haar kantoorbaan aan de wilgen nadat haar relatie plotseling stukloopt. Ze gaat het grote avontuur aan en fietst samen met haar Nieuw-Zeelandse geliefde Jon van Tanzania dwars door Afrika, via het Midden-Oosten, door Europa terug naar huis. Avontuurlijk, des te meer omdat de reisgenoten elkaar pas kenden. Het valt dan ook niet altijd mee om het hoofd te bieden aan de uitdagingen die ze on the road en in hun relatie tegenkomen. Ze zijn helemaal op elkaar aangewezen, ze reizen met minimale middelen, beleven de meest bizarre én mooie dingen.
