A new study in Nature reports that two people with tetraplegia were able to reach for and grasp objects in three-dimensional space using robotic arms that they controlled directly with brain activity. They used the BrainGate neural interface system, an investigational device currently being studied under an Investigational Device Exemption. One participant used the system to serve herself coffee for the first time since becoming paralyzed nearly 15 years ago. Video credit Mike Cohea/Brown University.

For 13 years, Brown University has partnered with William D’Abate Elementary School in Providence’s Olneyville neighborhood to bring after-school programming, in-class tutoring, and summer camps to students there. While the programs are a learning experience for everyone involved, the hope is that some lessons will have effects that last long after graduation.
The Brown community gathered on the College Green to celebrate the 11-year tenure of President Simmons. Student dance group Body & Sole kicked off the program with a flash mob, followed by performances by Spoken Word and members of the Intergalactic Community of A Cappella. Staff presented a memory book and photos to President Simmons, who gave some impromptu remarks thanking everyone for their contributions during her time at Brown.
Bat wings are like hands: meaty, bony and full of joints. A new Brown University study finds that bats take advantage of their flexibility by folding in their wings on the upstroke to save inertial energy. The research suggests that engineers looking at flapping flight should account for wing mass and consider a folding design. More info: http://news.brown.edu/pressreleases/2012/04/foldflap
The Corporation of Brown University, meeting in special session, March 2, 2012, elected Christina Hull Paxson to be the University’s 19th president. More info: http://www.brown.edu/web/president-elect/index.html
