  2. In 2010, Garrett moved back home to the family ranch in the Nebraska Sandhills. A former Marine who served in Iraq, Garrett used the GI Bill to go to school at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture and took part in the Combat Boots to Cowboy Boots Program: liferaydemo.unl.edu/web/ncta/combatcowboyboots

Now he and his parents steward land that’s been in the family since 1894. Since joining the business, Garrett’s been hard at work updating the cow-calf operation with new equipment and facilities. He talks about his path to finding financing and his experiences moving back and starting out in agriculture.

  3. Health care. Two words you’ve probably heard a lot lately. But if you live in a rural place, you know that health care isn’t always easy to access. There’s a long distance between you and the clinic; often a lack of medical professionals close by. How many small towns still have their own pharmacist or dentist anymore?

One initiative in Nebraska -- the Rural Health Opportunities Program (RHOP) -- is approaching this challenge by ‘growing their own’. This is a positive story and a great example of a program that seems to be working.

  4. Evrett and Ruth Chantry Lunquist have Common Good Farm near Raymond, Nebraska. Evrett gives a general introduction to their small, diversified, organic, biodynamic operation; what they do, and why. He talks about their pasture-raised eggs and how chickens fit into his rotation, and his farm's fertility program.

Evrett also talks about how they found land and financed it. One term that he mentions, the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority (NIFA), is an agricultural bond program. There are similar programs found in any states that benefit someone who sells property (land, equipment, livestock) to a beginner. The seller receives federal tax-free interest on the sale, which is an incentive to either work with a beginner or to pass some of the savings on to the beginner with a lower interest on a sales contract.

  5. Rebecka Fleischman was just trying to use her thanksgiving leftovers. But after that first experiment, word spread quickly about her all-natural mixes. Soon Rebecka and her husband Allen decided to give Soup ‘n More a go, converting the living room into a commercial kitchen. But they quickly outgrew the space. And that’s when they turned to REAP for help.

The Rural Enterprise Assistance Project (REAP) is a small business development program unlike any other. REAP was started by the Center for Rural Affairs in 1990 to meet the needs of self-employed rural people. Since then, it has grown to be Nebraska’s largest supporter of microenterprise, assisting entrepreneurs often when no other lending capital is available.
