1. Caring for people experiencing pain requires a realistic understanding of their distress. While another person’s pain can be obvious and distressing, there is considerable evidence that pain often is not recognized or is poorly assessed and underestimated.

    Systematic biases and barriers to effective communication will be described in: a) people who are suffering, b) those in a position to deliver care and c) the social environments in which pain is suffered.
