Captain Planet Foundation is delighted to announce that its brand-new environment-based education initiative, Captain Planet's Learning Garden Program, broke ground at Sedalia Park Elementary School in Cobb County on Monday, October 19. CPF President Ira Blumenthal, CPF Chair Laura Turner Seydel and Chairman of Cobb County School Board John Abraham all gave a few introductory remarks. Other members of the Cobb County School Board, the Cobb County Schools superintendent, the Sedalia Park Elementary School principal and teachers as well as Georgia Power, who serves as the presenting sponsor for the program, were all in attendance. Farmer D of Farmer D Organics gave a short introduction to the care of gardens before members of Ms. Duncan's Second Grade Class dug in for the initial planting.
Captain Planet's Learning Gardens Program is designed to link standard curriculum to the environmental education of young children and will integrate a traditional course of study into an outdoor classroom setting. The pilot program is now underway in select elementary and middle schools in Cobb County. The goal of the program is to provide an experience for children to connect with nature and offer a creative, nontraditional path to learning. Additionally, it will be in accordance with Georgia Performance Standards, so teachers will be able to teach their requirements while incorporating the use of the garden into their daily activities. A full garden curriculum is being developed over the course of the 2009-2010 school year. The full implementation of Captain Planet's Learning Garden Program, the on-site garden and accompanying curriculum will begin fall 2010. Captain Planet Foundation intends to execute the program nationwide over the next few years.
