“…we track across Tim’s tent, now perfectly rebuilt inside Robot’s ship. As we get nearer we see Robot waving his arm around in a dance-like fashion, and catch the glimpse of sharp teeth…”
I thought I would just go ahead and tackle one of the most complex shots in the film, just to see if I could pull it off! This shot contain multiple CG elements – the strange ship interior that glows and flickers to a music track taken from Tim’s music pad, the…

“…Tim wakes to find himself hanging from his legs, looking into Robot’s face…”
Have done quite a bit of FX work here to separate Ollie from the background, grade his face and add smoke effects. There is also a coloured flash across his face that will eventually be motivated by the colours from Robot’s eye looking at him.
Ollie was a real trooper being strung upside down. As you can tell by his face, it’s not really an effect you can get any other…
“…Tim carefully lifts the knight’s face plate to reveal…”
Lots of work on this to isolate the face, allowing me to play with it. Have added a temporary effect to Rufus’ tattoo, more work on his eye, helmet lens flare, heat haze, etc.
“…Tim hears the cry of a horse, jumps down into the long grass and looks to the horizon…”
This is a pure CG scene, the horse will eventually be lowered completely into the ground, 'flaps' of soil retracting over the hole. Not especially happy with the foreground foliage, but gives an idea.
“…the Knight moves towards Tim, but stumbles as he approaches…”
This shot marks the transission into a flashback sequence where Tim imagines himself fighting 'Stag-like' with Sue.
Used a time warp filter to slow the action down, then threw a whole bunch of effects at this to get the desired “inner glow” look.
“…Tim feels a terrible pain in his shoulder. He carefully pulls his shirt back revealing a strange tattoo, pulsating and glowing…”
Alex Vlcek did a great job of applying a green tattoo I had designed, to Ollie’s shoulder. The green allowed me to isolate the tattoo and start playing with it. This clip is very much work in progress and a bit heavy handed – but shows you where I am headed.
“…Tim waits patiently in the mouth of the tent – he knows what is coming…”
I created the Robot hand in CG then mapped it on to the side of the tent, together with other woodland shadows.
“…We see a shot taken from Robot’s POV as he plays back the capture of Sue…”
Poor Chloe wasn’t too impressed with being spun up side down – we got what we needed in one take, then someone noticed she wasn’t wearing the rucksack…
This was really an exercise in playing with a new Particle Generator to create an interesting look. The particles actually respond in several ways to the sound of Chloe’s cries – but unfortunately this test is mute. This…

"Criteria One" is my first short film project and is currently in production. The film involves a combination of 3D animation and live footage and is being shot primarily over the summer with post-production work expected to last way into next year.
The story follows superstar DJ Tim Chardie - a.k.a "Chardie Don't Surf" as he is relentlessly pursued through the wilderness by a mysterious robot that has already taken his girlfriend.
Criteria One will eventually contain some interesting fx and animation and this channel contains video ideas, sketches and work in progress that charts this process.
Just think about it… What if you were trapped under something heavy and the mouse was out of your reach? Scary, right? That's exactly why we have these keyboard shortcuts so you can still use Vimeo until the help arrives.
